Hey guys,

I am going to be going on my first backpack hunt and was hoping for some feedback on how many layers I should bring for a mid-september backpack hunt.

I am considering:
top layers
KUIU 145 merino base layer
FL kiln 250 mid
down jacket (black)
KUIU Chinook
marmot rain jacket

Bottom layers
KUIU Alpine pants
KUIU 145 bottoms
1 pair on merino underwear

is there anything you would add or remove? Potentially just pick one of the merino layers to save weight? Thanks for any feedback

You don't need to bring the Chinook. You can, but you don't need it. For top all you need is a base, mid, puffy, and hard shell.

Also, you probably won't need the 145 bottoms, but I would bring it. I also bring a merino beanie, lightweight gloves, and mid weight windblocking gloves. As well as an extra pair of underwear, socks, and baselayer top. My .02

are you mainly wearing the puffy to keep warm in the tent or at night? The only reason I ask is because it will not be a camo piece, just a solid black down jacket.

Drop the Chinook, keep the base layers. I use my base layers as my sleeping bag “liner”. Allows you to carry a slightly lighter sleeping bag and has the added bonus of being able to get out of the bag a little easier on those cold mornings. As the day warms up, shed the base layers and carry on. Gives you a good reason to find a good glassing spot and slow down a bit.

Ive got a chinook, never worn it during a hunt. Usually a 145 merino baselayer and guide vest. If it is on the cooler side will bring along an old pullover scent lok thing that I have. On the bottom, typically attack pants, no base layer I do have raingear I wear if it gets much colder but it is just cabelas space rain.

I got the Chinook when it went on sale to like $150 and haven't really used it yet, but think it will be a good piece to use for early season whitetail and turkey hunting in Illinois. But hindsight, I probably wouldn't buy it again and would have just invested right away in a camouflage puffy. Thanks for everyone's input!

You don't need a camo puffy........or even camo anything quite frankly. I have a green down puffy and a black one, but rarely use them during archery season. Lightweight merino base top and bottoms and my poly camo over them. If I need some insulation I'll throw on a microfleece mock-T between the layers and maybe a fleece jacket if need be.

Mine was a gift. I do wear it treestand or coyote hunting. Wish my wife would have bought it in a solid. I would wear it all the time. It's a really nice jacket.

I wear a fl aerowool t shirt, 250 kiln, uncompaghre, and guide pants. 1 extra pair of underoos and socks. Haven't been uncomfortable yet

I would add a vest. Last archery season in Colorado I spent most of the time in a fl aerowool with a vest. At the coldest I added a chama and was golden
