Closest thing to a Huskemaw 5-20x50

I like almost everything about this scope, the specs, the magnification range, the relatively light weight, the size, the reticle, the turret system, EXCEPT, for the fact that it’s a Huskemaw. The glass seems “good enough”, but the one thing I can’t get over is their heinous marketing tactics. Every since that terrible show Best of the West, which to me was a black eye to hunters and hunting!
I just can’t do it!

So, all that said, who makes something similar? Similar weight, size, mag range, etc. without a busy reticle (rules out Nightforce for me) that is reliable and sturdy, tracks right and holds zero? Non illuminated and SFP. A hunting scope, not something that requires a math degree. Thanks.

Sorry, imo, “reliable and sturdy, tracks right and holds zero” rules out Leupold VX lines. Which is so sad. If their stuff worked as designed with more regularity, they’d own the market. They get it in terms of functionality, but miss the mark in terms of reliability.

If I remember correctly the huskema and Nightforce nxs are made in same plant in japan. The difference being the nxs is disassembled then re assembled and tested once it lands in Idaho. Those two should be about as close to the same as you can get but they can also have different components depending on the build sheets.

There’s no NXS in 5-20x with a 50 mil objective, they weigh a good bit more, and do not have a comparable reticle. Not much about them seems similar to me.

If not Nightforce NXS I say Zeiss V4 or V6, before any Leupold VX series.
Hmm, Zeiss dropped the ball on me a customer service matter a few years ago. Still a little salty but I could get over it if there’s a good fit. Do they offer a clean and simple reticle? A plex with horizontal wind holds (like the Huskemaw) would be ideal.

Not the same mag range, but SIghtron SIII 6-24x50. Newer models have a simple zero stop, they track properly, glass is excellent, not too heavy.

The reticle I like best is the ZMOA-1 or 2. Happy medium between long range hunting and ringing steel in the off season.

Wrong. How many VX-5 have you personally used? That tired old "Leupolds suck because I had one 17 years ago that wouldn't track" doesn't apply to their newer scopes. I only run Mark 5 and VX-5 scopes now. I've compared them side by side with Nightforce ATACR and NXS. I like the Leupolds better, and sold all my Nightforce. NF makes a great scope, but the Leupolds are better in low light, so they are my prefered hunting scope. They track 100% and have held up to three trips out west and several dozen long range matches. I can't speak on the lower tier (VX-3 or others).

I've ran the VX5-HD and the VX6-HD a lot lately. Running them up 30 MOA and back down to dead zero several dozen times. The reticle on the 6HD is a TMOA and it's awesome. Where the crosshairs intersect is actually void of any markings, so you never actually cover up your POI. I don't like the illumination so I just never put the battery in. I'd spin that turret 1000 clicks up and down and then take a shot at a giant buck with confidence (in fact, I just did). They track, and the locking turret system is great. Also had a Zeiss V4 (the new one) and the leupold glass was superior. Can't speak to the V6 though.

I don't believe all the folks in the below thread with failed VX5 / VX6s are referring to their experience from 17 years ago. Leupy did a good job of getting people to believe their models addressed these concerns though.

The MK 5 seem to be much less failure prone than others, but I've seen enough to know they aren't top of the heap in reliability either. Have only seen 1 get a tracking test and past 20 MOA from center of its elevation travel it was 100% ghost clicking. RIfle course instructors who performed the test indicated it wasn't that uncommon as they test all of their student's scopes. Dude in thread below said he had to send all 3 of his back.

Light Optic Works makes scopes for a pile of manufacturers. I know some vortex Razor series, Athlon Cronus (i think), SWFA, Bushnell elite, Some upper end Sigs, and many more. I wouldn't universally accept that they are good to go because they are made there but it sure isn't a bad sign.

I must be the luckiest Leupold customer of the last few years. I have personally purchased, installed and shot 5 Mk5s and 2 VX-5s. I have done tracking tests and shot them out to 1200 yards, all with expected results. 3 western hunts, plenty of local (MS) hunting, 2 sniper schools, and about 2 dozen PRS and sniper competitions. They aren't the best scope in the world, but they are a very good cost/benefit product. But hey, you can use whatever you like.

Here we go again. Can we please not derail my thread? Leopold is not in consideration for me. Can we please just leave it at that.
Lol you right. My buddy has the new NX8 and it seems pretty badass and fairly lightweight. Im not sure of the reticle offerings though. Or that new Maven? They just did a review on it. Seemed to be decent.
