I just got my first rifle with a threaded barrel, a Browning X-Bolt2. Can someone please tell me if the thread protector should be left on when cleaning the barrel? Also, should the threads be cleaned and oiled? Any additional suggestions about caring for the threads will be appreciated. Thanks, guys!

why are you cleaning it? lol

dude don't trip about leaving the thread protector on when cleaning. not going to hurt anything having it on or off. I clean off the threads when I notice they get some carbon built up on them. solvent, break clean, CLP all work well. if they have stubborn carbon build up that's not coming out I will just chase the threads with a thread protector, suppressor, or what ever muzzle device that's within reach. I don't put oil on the threads, some may disagree but ive never had a problem.

it is a thread protector - for a reason. it is not needed but if you ding the threads you wont be happy.

i have used crutch tips on occasion. they pop on quickly. with a hole in the end you can clean with it on.

I take my can off, clean the rifle, wipe the threads with a paper towel and screw the can back on. If I soft case the rifle, I pull the can and don't bother with the thread protector.

Also, should the threads be cleaned and oiled?

To do so would be a very good way for that thread protector to work its way off while shooting. If you're not shooting suppressed, it's exceedingly unlikely that any notable fouling would get into those threads underneath the protector, so they don't need to be cleaned. Oil, as a lubricant, would help it come loose when you didn't want it to. Just leave in place, and occasionally check to make sure it's still tight.
