so hunted the desert unit last Saturday and need less to say sand got in everything. no problem for most of my gear but my razor binos got a bunch of sand in the twist up eye cups. i have to say i both love and hate that feature now. great eye relief, very comfortable but holy chit i cant get the sand out of those damn grooves inside the eye piece. i got what would come out with compressed air but theres grains still down in the sides that grind when twisted. do these come off? should i try irrigating them? help me out guys

Compressed air likely pushed the particles farther in.

Most optic companies suggest an optic cleaning brush to brush away the bigger chunks. Have you tried that?

I'd say a water. They make a water pick for cleaning teeth. Tiny stream of water. Might do the trick.

yeah i brushed everything off the lenses gently. wasn't going to risk scratching them. what i cant get out is the sand down on the grooves that cant be seen. i was thinking a water pick too. maybe ill call vortex and see what they say too

Cut the hair off your chest and arms and make a lens brush.... just kidding:)

They unscrew, so that's what I would suggest.

Water pick probably won't get everything out, but possible.

Lefty loose, but it takes a small amount of pressure.

thats what i wanted to hear there. i didnt want to break um. thanks man

well that didnt quit work. that takes loosens the whole eye piece. i just need to figure out how to remove the cups

littlebuf,

I think the forced air may have got the sand in the lubricant they put in the twist-outs. I think the best bet is to call Vortex and have them serviced.

I had the same sand/grit problem.
After I tried unscrewing the eye cup and having the entire eye piece start loosening, I called Vortex. They recommended sending them in to make sure seals are intact.
They came back in like-new condition. (and were returned very quickly).

well thats what im going to do then. i dont want to screw around, i want them right. hope they turn um around quick. its coyote season and i hate being without binos

Gentle dunking in clean water. I had to once when I did some desert hunts. Worked awesome.

Had my last pair of Leicas for 12 years and don't think I'll ever have to buy another pair. Let me know how the Vortex holds up 12 years later..

I'd be willing to bet they'll hold up fine. If for some reason they didn't, I heard Vortex has pretty good warranty.

I dropped my bil razors this deer season and messed up the eye cup. He popped them off and had the winged cups on in just a few minutes. I'd give a dealer a call and have them explain the process to you. Doesn't sound like you need to send them out to me
