Clean water

Hmm. I like the idea of the Geigerrig with an inline Sawyer. Im sure the pressure helps with cleaning up and filling stoves, bottles, ect. Have you had any other issues besides the Sawyer freezing? I have read some reviews on the Geigerrig and some say they are sweet others say not so much. Do you like this system? Im trying to decide between a Platypus Big Zip (dirty bag), Sawyer Squeeze, and Camelback Antidote bladder as a gravity system or a Geigerrig Hydration Engine and Sawyer Squeeze as an inline system with a nalgene bottle on the side.

There is very little pressure after you hook up the filter, so I wouldn't plan on using it as you see in the Geigerrig commercials. The purpose is to use the pressure to force the water through the filter rather than wait 20 minutes for it to drip through a gravity-fed system. I have never had any issues with the Geigerrig other than the little rubber band that holds the slider on the top fell off and it didn't make it in my bag one trip. Luckily I had some tarp clamps in my bag to make it work, but something I will make sure of from now on. The only other lesson learned is that you can overpump the system and when the water gets low the membrane can block the hole, so let some air out and slowly pump until you get water again. I am going to try the dirty/clean bag system but since I like to put flavor in my water I will also bring a nalgene. That being said, 2 platty's weigh as much as the Geigerrig so not too much difference other than the speed. If you remember to plan ahead and always have a full clean bag I think you'd prefer a dirty/clean system because it does take about 2 minutes or so to get a nalgene out of the Geigerrig system, but if you want the convenience of water on demand you will like the Geigerrig system. Either way I would pre-filter your water to prevent clogging. I carry a cheap bug net that I hold over the opening when filling the bag and I have never had to back flush in the field. That's another advantage of the dirty/clean system; you can more easily back flush in the field if you had to. With the Geigerrig system I think you'd have to use your mouth unless you want to carry the stupid syringe.

I have and have used both for a few seasons. I swapped to the Geigerrig because I didn't want to stop to wait for gravity and I got tired of sucking (literally).

If your interested this video will get you started and show you how well it works.

Both the Big zip and Geigerrig work great. I don't have a bad thing to say about either. Just depends on your situation and what your after.

This year I will be running my Steripen adventurer. Fill up a big bag and sterilize a liter at a time.

I appreciate the input fella's! I'll probably end up buying both systems and playing around with them to see which one is more practical for me. Seeing that I already have a Camelbak bladder I'll probably start by running a gravity system and later trying out the Geigerrig. Thanks!!

Yep my main Bladder is a camelbak Military spec version I use that for my clean water reservoir. The Giegerrig and Big zip are both dirty water bladders. Good luck either route is great and functional. You cant go wrong.
