Christensen MPR vs Sig Cross... Which one?

Im in the market to buy a compact 16" or less .308 to shoot subsonics out of a banish 30... Been looking at Christensens MPR and Sig Cross both with a 16" barrel. OR my mind has been pondering going really short .308 like a Savage psc 10.5" barrel or a Christensen MPP with a 12.5" barrel. Anyone have any input on these? All these seem to be pretty packable and i would like to think be awesome for a hang on stand/short range hunting gun.

Technically, using hand loads voids the Christensen warranty. If you’re loading your own subsonic ammo, that might be a consideration.

I've got the Sig Cross. I like the gun for what it is. The best I have been able to get out of the gun is 1.25-1.5 and thats why a wide variety of ammo.


That being said, my local Scheels rep recommended I avoid the MPR and the secondhand shelf with more than 8 MPR's to choose from at Scheels seconded his information.

Mind you that is simply anecdotal evidence but it was enough to persuade me to stay away.

If you aren’t after something that folds down, I have one of the Model Seven kuiu’s that came factory with a 16.5 inch barrel already threaded. I haven’t gone down the suppressor road yet and don’t use a brake but it shoots about .75 consistently. They pop up on gunbroker occasionally and you’d be in it ~$500 less than a cross.

A friend of mine has had good luck with a t3x he had cut down and threaded, also probably save you ~$500. Then you have the plenty of options for upgrading the stock & bottom metal, although his is bone stock and shoots great.

I picked up a Cross in 65CM for a really good deal and enjoyed shooting it. It shot well for me with Hornady ammo. I didn’t get a chance to hunt with it, a buddy needed a rifle so I sold it to him. I would like to get another Sig in 308 or it would really be rad if they made it in 556/223.

For about the same price as the MPR you could chop a tikka to your preferred barrel length and put it in an XLR folder.

I just finished my 16" 308 with an MDT HNT26 stock. It's a dream to pack in a backpack and to carry.

I’d recommend a 300blk Ruger American if your main goal is subs. 308 subs are doable but powder selection is tough and fast twist rates to stabilize heavies are harder to come by. Buddy of mine just went through this and decided to stick with the 308 for supers and get a 300blk for subs. Just my 2 cents.

Tikka makes a foldable one too but good bit more $$$... my thoughts were could shoot a heavier bullet out of .308 than 300blk out there for more KE and knockdown. Example ur shooting both aO 300blk and a 308 at 1000fps, 300blk is 150 grain bullet, where .308 is 200 or 220 grain bullet... .308 would win everytime in a hunting situtation wouldnt it? @TxLite

I am shooting 220gr makers expanding subs in my 300blk just under the supersonic threshold. They require a 1:7 twist rate. I haven’t seen a factory 308 with that twist. 300blk as a cartridge is optimized for shooting heavy bullets at subsonic velocities.

Now that trailboss is completely MIA the powder selection for 308 to run subsonic with a good fill rate isn’t great. In my buddy’s rifle he found that it was difficult to keep consistent velocities near the threshold because the velocity deviations were high. He was also only able to stabilize the 190gr subx because of his twist rate and at lower velocities he was seeing tumbling/destabilization at 100yards.

If your main goal is truly subsonic I’d go with a fast twist 300blk. If you want to shoot subs for fun but hunt with supers I’d go 308.

All that being said I think you’re much better off hunting with supers than subs. 30 cal subs pretty much limit you to 100 yards for effective range and act a lot like broadheads instead of what you’re used to with supers.

Again, just my two cents and doesn’t really answer your question as to which rifle suits your needs better.

Loading my own. I haven’t yet, but have seen some impressive expansion from guys on the 300blk Facebook groups. I think there are a few places selling them as loaded ammunition though. Discreet ballistics also makes great expanding subs as well.

Every time I go to grab my 300blk to hunt I end up just bringing my 7-08. Supers just do a better job of killing from what I’ve seen. Not that subsonics won’t do it if used properly. Subs are definitely more fun to shoot though.

Edit to add- get what makes you happy. But if your only goal is a 16” chassis folder to shoot subsonics at 100 yards and in, I wouldn’t overlook a 300blk ruger american in a heat seeker chassis or similar

The 300blk will out perform a 308 at subsonic velocities all day long. 220 makers are OK for hogs up close. Before 300blk I loaded my own subs in 308 and 357 to kill hogs at night since we are infested. Never could get accuracy or consistent arcs with the 308. Now I use a 350 legend with heavy subs. It's a pig dropper! Also comes in ruger for under 400$. We shoot 300blk at home in the back yard to keep the kids in practice for hunting season. Cheap quiet and neighbor friendly.

I've owned two MPR's (one I bought, and the other was a brand new warranty replacement for the second time I sent it in for warranty after they replaced the barrel the first time), and one Sig Cross. You couldn't give me another one of either if I had to keep them. They were both just epic piles of shit.

I get the desire for something like that but unfortunately to get yourself a good platform similar it's going to cost you twice as much money. Q Fix or a custom (or Tikka) dropped in a MDT HNT26 is tits.
