20” 30Sherman Mag with an ultra 5 and a brake sometimes, 10.7 lbs all up with the can.
215bergers at 2950fps
245bergers at 2780fps
124hammers at 3650fps

Factory 300 PRC 212/220s 2750fps

I’d probaly stick with 20” since you’re running a brake. If you had a can I’d say 18”. I will say running an 18” 300wsm I’d get a brake thats not angled back to far rearward. Doesn’t have to be a 90* but not much more than that. Running the most efficient brakes that start to angle back a lot like my terminator t3 on my 30sm gave me a headache within 10shots shooting under cover with double hearing protection. Switching to a Ti pro 3 fixed that and the rearward blast was reduced quite a bit. I could shoot it all day but a slightly less aggressive brake design would be better for blast imo and is worth the slight gain in recoil.

Just to be clear I never really even noticed the reward blast or headaches using the terminator brake on 24-26” barrels to much. In your wsm With 6 inches less barrel to burn powder and the brake being that much closer to your head the effect will be more dramatic than it is currently in a 24” Bbl. But not trying to scare you away from it, I ran several 16-20” guns before I had suppressors. I have an apa, good brakes but I haven’t tried it on my 30SM.

What length would yall run a 7 mm rem mag? With it being a little less on recoil than the 30 cals, would a shorter 18in barrel work?

I have one cut at 20” for use with a suppressor. I gave up on average 28fps per inch. It would depend on what barrel length your suppressor is rated for if you are using one.

So….ill be cutting down a 300wsm from 24” down to 20”, with a brake. Intent is to
Make it more compact and slightly lighter for mountain backpack hunting.

Would like to hear from people who’ve done it, and would like to see some pics! Bonus points for flutted barrels.

also, Any reason not to go down to 18”?
Hear from people while you can. 20 inch wsm w brake will end all that.

Have experience?

I currently shoot a 22” braked 300wsm with zero issues.
How much hunting have you done with it, and have you ever forgotten hearing protection in the heat of the moment?
I have 80% hearing loss left and 30% loss right. Constant ringing.
Much of the loss on the left was from one braked shot. If a brake catches you just right, it only takes once.

Come on more details? Caliber? Length before and after?
300 wm 26 to 24..its on the block to go to 20" shortly didn't want to take to much too fast and mess up the CG
A braked 300 winmag is last rifle I would use for hunting. Scares everything into the next county when u shoot and the muzzle flash at sunrise/sunset is horrible. No to mention the hearing damage you do to yourself and those around you.

Hey I appreciate the input, and I agree a lot of people talk it but don’t walk it. I always carry it with me and always use it. Even waterfowl hunting i won’t shoot without it. Tinnitus is in my genes and I don’t need to add fuel to the fire!

I wear earplugs all the time now. Cutting grass, chainsaw, blower, hunting. Can't stand to lose any more hearing.

I’m nearly in your boat, but not quite so severe. The issue with breaks is that you can still get hearing damage even with ear pro due to the sound waves traveling through your skull and flesh. That’s been pretty well documented.

Hearing loss sneaks up on you. Breaks on short barreled magnums aren’t worth it.

Yes sir, I won't use a brake. Bought a 300prc just to see what 225 gr eld-m would do...and i have old crappy shoulders. Gimme that recoil vs the noise.

Do you have any chrono numbers with any factory loads you could share?

I just cut mine to 20” and have a suppressor on it. Still shooting 162 grain ELDX at 2850
Is that Hornady factory ammo?

The only “factory” ammo that I have chronograph data for is an Unknown Munitions 168gr VLDH which is going a mild 2731fps. I don’t have any data for this load before chopping the barrel. It worked well on deer and elk this year. My numbers for velocity loss came from my hand loads. My 168gr VLDH hand loads are right around 2890fps. If I chronograph any of the Hornaday or Nosler factory ammo I’ll update the thread.
