Choice of 7mm for bull elk

I'm letting my wife use my 7-08 this year for elk. I have no experience, but have heard really good things about 140 accubonds.

I am not a guide, but have participated in >50 elk harvested over the past 25 years with either 7mm08, 30-06, 7 Mag, or 300 WM.

IMO….Shot placement, confidence, and comfort with the selected gun and caliber is the #1 criteria. Second is downfield performance based on bullet type, size and velocity. I have personally witnessed 3 elk double lung shot with a 7mm 08 that required tracking (very little blood from small exit hole) and a follow-up shot and 1 that looked like a great shot but was not recovered due to lack of a blood trail. I would definitely choose the 7 Mag and 160 accubond. The 160-180 Accubond from 7 mm mag, 30-06 or 300 WM have always performed great (even when shot placement was not perfect).

My choice is and always will be the Rem Mag on occasion I hunt elk with a rifle. Has anyone used or seen the Weatherby 7 rem mag with the fluted barrel, fluted bolt and pistol grip? I want one!

Great comment! I’m sticking with the time tested and proven Nosler Partition. This round does not get enough love with all the marketing of other rounds you did not mention

I have no experience with a 7-08. However, after making sure that the tips were clear, I wouldn't hesitate to use either a 168gr. Berger VLD or 175gr. Berger Elite Hunter in your 7mm Rem Mag. I'd load both and run with whichever one the barrel liked better.
