If he is a normal forked 4 pt, i typically use the following to very close accuracy.
Inside spread of main beams - X4
+ Lenght of G2's - X3
+ Mass Score
+ (if Eye Guards) - 10"
- any obvious shortcomings - ? "
To estimate mass, I visualize if I can get my thumb to the tip of my pointer finger around the antler. If they on average just touch, that is 35". From there I can add or subtract pretty quickly.
If you use this formula on the buck in my avatar, you get the following
25" inside spread - x4 = 100"
14" G2's - x3 = 42"
Mass (carries it high) = 40"
Eye guards (1 only so subtract because lack of symmetry deducts from net) = -5"
short g4's (4" per side)= -8"
TOTAL = 179"
Buck Official Green scored 178 3/8"
Green he was right at 30"
This isn't an exact science,but it has gotten me really close while looking through the scope and needing to mentally add up a buck that was pushing it. If a buck is very narrow, but has good beams, this starts getting a little out of wack.
