Want to plan an out of state elk hunt and wondering what would be the best and most reasonably price hunt.

Thanks in advance!

That’s doable. But it won’t be easy. Get a general license in Montana or Wyoming. Set up a solid base camp. Get up early every day and hike your ass off. Then get up the next day really early and hike what’s left of your ass off. Repeat if necessary.

If that gets old set a spike camp about 1000-1500 feet higher in elevation. That’s work too but then the mornings get easier. Good luck!

I’ll have to check out those two states! I don’t need someone easy just need it to be doable and attainable with effort

Cow elk in Wyoming after a snowstorm in winter range. Low elevation. Hotel accommodation. Atv access. Under a 1000 bucks

Awesome! Thanks so much for the suggestions. Would love to shoot a bull but I’m after meat mainly so being able to experience a elk hunt for under $1000 is perfect

Damn near free hunt. Just find someone that elk hunts go with them learn as much as you can and be ready to haul out elk on your back. We have a guy coming with, no tag and not charging him anything. He said he would pay for food and gas but we are not letting him.
**** BUT REMEMBER THIS DO NOT TELL ANYONE WHERE THEY HUNT OR TAKE THERE SPOT**** that's the big one.

I’m in Iowa so nobody here that I know that go elk hunting but solid advise for sure. One of these days I’ll make the jump and do a diy elk hunt

Unless you are needing to purchase a bunch of gear, an out of state elk hunt is acutally pretty cheap. Your only cost would be the tag and some fuel. So, for example, Colorado tag is $670 and then I burn about $550-600 worth of fuel driving from NC and back. So $1200 for the hunt. Your drive would be much shorter, so less fuel.

Pack all your food, don't eat out at fast food places while on the road, don't buy a drink or snack at every gas station you stop at. Sleep in your truck or at campgrounds, no hotel rooms. It's really not that expensive.

Now, if you feel like you have to go out and buy a new pack, new bow, new set of clothes, new boots, new tent, etc. Then you are going to be spending a ton of money.

I’m pretty good for the most part on gear. Would need to get lighter clothes since a lot of what I have is for the later parts of October and then through the first parts of January. Would probably need to get a couple elk calls and then do my best to perfect them.

Archery gear I feel like I’m solid on. I do a lot of tinkering with my setup so I’ve got it shooting as good as my skill will allow

Archery kind of changes the game for a rookie going alone.

You have preference points built up in any states?

No preference points yet but once I narrow down to a state then I’ll start working away at the requirements.

Probably will need to do my first few hunts with a rifle and then start trying my luck getting within bow range

It’s always too late to start building points. Starting to chase trophy units right now would be completely futile in pretty much every state.

Look at points as opportunities to just hunt bulls.

Right now there are only two states you can hunt bulls regularly with no points, and the opportunity there is steadily dwindling away.

The demand for what you are looking for far exceeds the supply. Tons of people make the decision they want to go hunt elk and "have a good hunt". With zero points, that is a very challenging thing to do. Your best opportunity is to look into getting cow elk tags while you build points or go bust your tail in an OTC hunt. Don't go into it thinking cow elk will be easy- they are not unless everything comes together perfectly. You will still need to work hard and do your research.
