What forums, would like to do some reading?I'm unsure why you'd want to cover a stainless barrel, but an option for cheap would be to use spray paint. There are some good threads on other forums that show how to do it really well. It will scratch, but you can re apply every year or two.

What paint do you use?I use spray paint on mine, easy to touch up and removes fairly easily if you decide to go with something else.

I think the one I found that was most comprehensive was on the waterfowl forum duckhuntingchat. What forums, would like to do some reading?
I read that or one like it about 10 years back. I painted 3 stocks that way and had reasonable results. The ones that were least used held up pretty well. My base coat stayed on synthetics but my over coats showed wear at normal handling points. On wood stocks I had some separation of the base coat even though I sanded through the clear coat and stain. In hindsight I probably should have roughed the clear coat and painted over it.I think the one I found that was most comprehensive was on the waterfowl forum duckhuntingchat.

Not sure if that will work, if it doesn't, it's title is
"steps to painting a shotgun (dial up users beware)"
