If cost is the motivation...keep it stainless. The animals surely dont mind.

If it's for looks...Melonite / Nitride

Have this done on a few glock slides, although it is more for function on a slide than mainly for looks on a barrel...it holds up very well to scratches, environmentals, etc.

Pretty cheap if you tape it up yourself and find a machine shop to do it...more $$ if you take it to a smith or send it off.

When I was searching to do my first slide....it much more cost effective than cerakote.

I'm unsure why you'd want to cover a stainless barrel, but an option for cheap would be to use spray paint. There are some good threads on other forums that show how to do it really well. It will scratch, but you can re apply every year or two.

I use spray paint on mine, easy to touch up and removes fairly easily if you decide to go with something else.

I think the one I found that was most comprehensive was on the waterfowl forum duckhuntingchat.

The link to it is https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.duckhuntingchat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36000&ved=2ahUKEwitw96ujo3mAhVDKKwKHdipDOcQFjAEegQIBBAB&usg=AOvVaw2ADqJngu-UOtyTgmKoft-t.

Not sure if that will work, if it doesn't, it's title is

"steps to painting a shotgun (dial up users beware)"

I read that or one like it about 10 years back. I painted 3 stocks that way and had reasonable results. The ones that were least used held up pretty well. My base coat stayed on synthetics but my over coats showed wear at normal handling points. On wood stocks I had some separation of the base coat even though I sanded through the clear coat and stain. In hindsight I probably should have roughed the clear coat and painted over it.
