Looking for advice on building a budget clothing system that I can use hunting and fishing in almost all environments and locations. I'm thinking

-200g merino top and bottom
-synthetic cheap pants
-merino socks
-some type of fleece mid layer for early/mid season outerlayer and late season mid layer
-down jacket in camp and glassing
- rain jacket & pants
-gaiters
-expedition weight merino layers for extreme cold
-mechanix gloves & some type of gore tex glove for real cold days

What am I missing / where can i find this stuff for a cheap/budget price. Thanks

The best advice anyone will give you is first to stay away from camouflage and probably the higher end brands. You can find just as good quality stuff from non-hunting manufacturers. You can check camofire for base layers. Costco also makes a budget friendly, yet quality puffy jacket. Also check sierra trading post for stuff on sale

200g merino is pretty heavy for a first layer. I'd look for something lighter, in the 150-170 range. Way more flexible. 200g is gonna be hot, and harder to vent once you warm up. Takes longer to dry as well.

Ok, thanks. In the past I have only used the real cheap synthetics

I’d like to think I went the cheap route and diverted funding elsewhere and it gets me by pretty well.

Pants- Prana Zion
Base layer - BlackOvis NWT ss 150 merino
Skre merino bottoms( rarely wear these)
Mid layer- BlackOvis NWT 230 hooded quarter zip

Puffy- browning Emmett or something like that off camofire

Rain jacket- gohunt anorak that I seam sealed

Gaiters- OR flextech

Boots- crispi lapponia

Socks- Darn tough

Beanie- carhartt

Gloves- browning hells canyon

This gets me through August - December from bear to elk in the Rockies and the rainforest.

Nice! I'm diverting funds as well. Much rather have a good pack and binos than a full kit of matching clothes

Paradox merino blend. Wrangler stretch pants. Walmart merino blend socks, might also find at Costco and sams club. Habit brand for a nice summer fishing shirt, similar to what Columbia makes. Any generic fleece. For a puffy you just need to watch the discount sites like camofire, stp, rs classifieds, Eddie Bauer has frequent sales. Rain gear, there’s a space rain set in the classifieds right now for a $100. Kings camo rain gear on sale, marmot precip frequently on sale. For gloves, hats etc the department store stuff does well for the price but it’s not something I would count on for an extreme outing.

Footwear is too personal to recommend a specific brand and model. I would go to some local shops to try on then search the web for a deal. If ya don’t have a store near by deal with a good retailer that can help narrow it down and gives you a good exchange policy.

I wore my Costco down puffy and my Uniqlo puffy on my archery CO elk hunt and then in AZ for my elk hunt and Dec mule deer hunt. You can sometimes find the Costco Gerry puffy on Ebay for under $40, the Uniqlo puffy is usually on sale for $69 at their website.

I’m in the South/Midwest, depending on where you draw the line, but I’ve had really good success at thrift stores for general outdoors clothing, especially for the wife. I spent money on a good all around pair of camo hiking pants that will work in the turkey woods or can be layered under in the winter, and I bought a water resistant camo hoodie that is versatile enough for cool mornings and light rain. Other than that, I layer under those items with my hiking/backpacking gear. A good merino baselayer shirt is also a must for me.

Piecemeal gear from Sierra trading post, steep & cheap and Camofire.

Have patience and you can put together a nice kit.

I would look for used clothes or go with hiking brand clothing. But I will say this, the higher end gear is higher end for a reason and the customer service is great from my experience when I had to use it.

In addition to the puffy, Costco has merino blend socks, nylon underwear, nylon pants and synthetic blend tops. I’ve picked up quite a bit of that stuff and wear it all the time. Some of it really makes me think why I have spent $100 on pants from one of the big camo companies. I’m also a big fan of the prana zions.
