ChatGPT virtual scouting assistance

This thread is hilarious. I’m not too worried about couch scouters. They can use all the AI they want. Ai is just the latest overblown overhyped tech that is likely going to underperform and be less transformative than the hype. Don’t forget that the easiest way to stop AI is no different than dealing with a cocky software engineer and shut the power off to the computer.

Without those cocky individuals that you clearly loathe…
You have no water, no food, no electricity, no climate control, no banking, no transportation, no communication, no medicine, no manufacturing, etc.

The advantage is still with those that KNOW how to read maps, know their area intimately, and understand how pressure will influence animal behavior. But I don't underestimate AI and the potential impact on hunting is real.

On the flip side, AI will be able to digest massive amounts of information in a minute or two and generate recommendations without bias. I don't think it can replace boots on the ground, but it could have a lot of potential for areas you haven't been to yet. Crazy times.

That's sad news. At the end of the day, businesses will have to decide whether they want to implement this technology and weigh the impacts to the world/country/city/town/community.

I think there are parallels with ai and the invention of firearms. These are both technologies that can/have fundamentally altered the course of humanity and balance of power. And being tools, we can choose to use them or not, and how we use them. There's sort of an interesting debate here about what responsibilities a company has to a community. In a simplistic view, If a company is public, they are obligated to continue growth as there's no reason to invest in a corporation if they do not make more money than they did last year. Ai is an enticing way to reduce costs, and therefore increase revenue. But as we're seeing, this can be detrimental to society.

I'm not necessarily endorsing any particular point of view right now, just some thoughts. But....If I had to take any stance, I think the public can expect businesses to take a certain amount of care for its community. As it's the public that pays for the roads, utilities and other infrastructure that businesses need to exist. They don't have to think of it as altruism, but as a necessary business expenditure to keep their business running. Not to mention that if people don't have jobs they won't be able to buy their products.

Has to be the feds and they (collective) would mess it up. Politicians, bureaucrats, judges, etc all would twist it and manipulate it for personal gain.

Look at Musk and DOGE. Half the country supports the efforts and the other half is advocating for his literal demise and the destruction of Tesla , SpaceX and everything else he is involved in. Not a lot of incentive to “do the right thing”.

It is unlikely any BoD would allow a business to get involved with something of this magnitude going forward. It is also a potential death sentence for a business, its CEO or owner, employees, shareholders, contractors, business partners, etc since there is no civility in the USA anyone. Full blown attack and destruction is perfectly acceptable to far too many people.

All tools can be used for good as well as harm. If we don’t manage ourselves others will manage us. Even on this site, it is impossible to get everyone on board on a single item; look at the scope threads despite folks’ best efforts.

This thread went exactly how I thought it would go after I read the OP.

Ha, I think we got some interesting conversation out of it. I sort of figured there would be spirited back and forth. But I've appreciated everyone's input

So what arbitrary distance does it go from ok to shoot one to not ok according to you.
~300 yards
That's my number, give or take. What's yours?

The thing that folks seem to be missing is that we're talking about ethics here, not laws. Folks hold different opinions on what is ethical and what is not. Just because I think shooting an animal from 600 yards away is unethical doesn't mean you have to.

I never said *you* have to stop shooting animals from the next county over. I just said I don’t find it ethical to do so. I was drawing an interesting conclusion about how our ethics could differ so widely - I find no objection with any use of AI at a desk for scouting, but object to shooting an animal from so far away that they have almost zero chance of detecting my presence.
As long as you're not breaking any laws, you're free to shoot an animal from a mile away. Don't expect everyone to be impressed with you, though.

I read about folks using AI for all this cool stuff. Is there an AI for dummies somewhere? I can barely turn my iPhone on and off.

It's easy to be skeptical, and tech history is full of hype cycles. But many transformative technologies – the internet, electricity, even the printing press – faced similar dismissal early on. While we should be critical of inflated claims, the sheer pace of development and the breadth of problems AI is starting to tackle suggest it's more than just hype.
Attributing its function solely to the power cord undersells the sophisticated learning and pattern recognition it enables.

Also, you might take a scroll through this recent Executive Order focused on promoting and improving Artificial Intelligence (AI) education for young people in the United States.

(Of course, money that could have been diverted to supporting the goals of the executive order — as well as many people with expertise in the subject — are being cut from the federal government, but that's a different conversation).

I'm sure there's something out there like that. But to get started you can just go to https://chatgpt.com/ . There sre some limitations on the free version. Somene else might be able to chime in on a good free tool if they're out there. Not much to it to start asking questions. The system can follow along with the conversation, so for example if you first ask about this week's weather, it will know what you mean if you ask a follow up question like "tell more about Thursday". I think this sort of iteration is what makes it interesting. You can keep fine tuning the responses and the quality of response can depend on how well you phrase your questions.

Don't let the grumpy old men who are afraid of technology turn you away. These are the guys who will talk shit to you for wanting to learn and taking advantage of today's resources while at the same time giving you zero help to learn. They come from a time where it was a lot easier and affordable to go out often and learn by experience. Today does not enable lots of us to be able to do that.

I've been using ChatGPT for several outdoor related things and its become very helpful. it gives a starting point so you have some sort of idea of the subject. i dont know why people have to be so shitty.
That my friend is a lame excuse to disguise sheer laziness.

Learning by experience is free you just have to have the gumption to turn your devices off and get out there and put some miles on while paying attention to the natural world around you. The only thing that’s changed between 1985 and 2025 is technology.

We may not be too far from a world where AI will pick you out a spot, you hope in your self driving car to get close, then your mechanical legs walk you the rest of the way in. Only 1k for these (no GPS though)

And my personal Tesla robot will set up my tent, cook my dinner, and pack out my elk. I don't think I'll let the robot carry my rifle.

Good call on the rifle - haha. Could have a pack train of those haul your coolers and camp out, setup, then stand around to be your bear fence.

We're going to need more wilderness areas !
