I passed a couple cows last year and ended up not getting an elk. I was getting into bulls on a regular basis but couldnt quite close the deal. No regrets..

I've passed on cows. I've also had some hunts where I had more opportunity on bulls than cows. Last year I passed on cows because they all had calves with them. I try not to shoot a cow with calf if possible.

last year i didnt see a single cow, i plan to kill any elk every year thats legal but its hard when theres a herd bull coming close to ya and the cows right there, but we do everything we can to jus get some elk in the freezer

I have had almost all Bull encounters when in bow range of elk. I dropped the string on a cow during my last hunt on the last hour before we headed home, only to have a last minute deflection. The only time I passed on cows for a bull was above 11000' on the side of Mt. Evans chasing a herd bull and his harem around a bowl....the cows kept busting me before the Bull got in range. Shoulda stuck a damn cow. No regrets. Not sure I could have gotten either back up the 1000' to the road.2010 052.jpg

Haven't gone yet, but look at it as hunting any other animal. The more experience you get actually shooting is better than waiting. Next thing you know its the end of the year and you have no experience. By experience I mean getting into position, getting close enough, drawing and then letting the arrow fly. It will only help for next year.
