Once. Freekin’ impressive! Bud killed a bull, hit his dad up back in camp via txt, dad brought the atv and winch and I met them on top of the ridge. We used a Capstan winch to bring the entire animal to a bench where we could process him on a flat, with tarps and three guys and load him directly onto the ATV racks. Beyond impressive under the circumstances (i.e. N. Idaho sh!t brush and steep!)! Literally ran line down to the bull, harnessed him and hauled him up slope. Repeat. Aside from running a saw up the hill, I didn’t have to haul a thing.
If you’re hunting someplace they’re conducive, you won’t regret it!
Yes. Found a Lewis winch at a yard sale cheap 10 years ago. Mounted it to a 046. It claims to pull 5k in weight. Its heavy and stays in the truck tool box during hunting and fire wood season. Replaced cable with synthetic rope. Its great to pull trees and logs to a spot to then use Warn winch on truck.
I have a Lewis and a Simpson capstan. I use both on a Husky 51 chainsaw which is a relatively small saw. I'd recommend the capstan because its lighter and you can make longer pulls because of the length of rope. The Simpson is slightly tougher to run by yourself because you have to keep tension on the rope and keep the saw running although you can lock the throttle on the saw then pull the rope. The Lewis doesn't need anything but the throttle running but its a heavy bitch. They're both pretty amazing with what they can pull and if your wanting to bring stuff out whole they'll do it plus all the day in day out little stuff around the place they help with.
used a stihl powerhead to pull 30' foot loaded boats off gravel bars, worked like a champ.only problem is if you do not have an anchor point(don't ask me how i know)that is where the land anchor comes into play
I have been bring the Lewis set up on my Wooldridge Alaskan II just in case I run it into a gravel bar. They are handy but I already had that older middle weight saw laying around.
I have an older stihl chainsaw. Can't remember the model. It was given to me by my uncle. I need to see which winch it will work with. Capstan or Lewis.
