I was able to punch my tag around 9:30 this morning on a broken up bruiser. After spotting 5 bulls this morning I decided to try to put a stalk on them. I ended up hiking up a coulee that was just down wind of them thinking I would be able to pop over the ridge and get a shot. While I was going up the draw I all of the sudden had a rattle snake right under my feet. I started to shoot at the snake with my bow and as I was doing this I look across the coulee and see a bunch of cows coming down. I took one step away from the snake and kneeled down. The cows walked on the opposite side of the draw at 40 yards all while the rattle snake was rattling like crazy only two feet away. Soon the bull came out of the timber and I was able to anchor him at 37 yards while the snake was going nuts behind me. After I shot the bull I got even with the snake and took his rattles as a souvenir, he had 8 buttons. Pretty cool hunt, and I was glad to finally get an elk on the ground after missing 3 other bulls this year.

that's nerves of steel right there. I hate rattlers. I had a similar experience this year while calling for a friend.my friend about jumped out of his skin. when I turned around there was a timber rattler coiled up catching some sun and not rattling. could have been disastrous for me but ended up being his last day in the sun. my buddy holding him up after a brief tussle with the reptile.

You miss three bulls? Then you stick on with a rattler two feet from you.. Guess you just need the added pressure of kill or be killed? Awesome bull man!

That's the second bull I have seen that's died like that I think that's cool!

Man for that snake, I would have killed him or moved off a little more.

velvetfvr, I would have taken a lot more steps away from the nasty little bugger but if I would have moved any more than I did the elk would have blown out of there. Just the half step I took got me pegged by a cow and I thought it was over but she decided that I wasn't a threat and kept on coming. The worst part of the whole deal was that as I was waiting for the bull to come out of the timber I could hear the snake behind me trying to slither but I couldn't tell which way he was trying to go. I had hit him in the body with one of my shots so he couldn't move very fast, but that also had him mad as hell at me. It was pure elk addiction that made me be able to sit there so close to that damn snake while I waited for the bull to make his way to me. Definitely a hunt to remember, but hopefully not completely repeated.

It takes a dangerous combination of stones and brains(or lack thereof) to pull that shot off. You are the hero of the week.
