Last post was taken down due to it having the unit in the title...

I'm going to hunt mule deer in central/southern Idaho near the Columbia Plateau. That land is super flat which is why I had to pick that because of the people going with. They are too old for rough terrain. I've only hunted in areas with elevation so can anyone give any pointers (besides locating water sources) as to how to scout so we can at least see some Muley bucks? Not looking for your honey hole. I'm one of the dreaded nonres hunters that has never step foot in this unit and OnX isnt much help. Thanks in advance.

Yes it was. That's what makes this place different, we won't allow spot burning.

Welcome to the forum-hang around and you will find there are some great folks here.

Look forward to it! Just curious, I see many posts with unit numbers in them. How are some people able to post unit numbers and some aren't. The "Similar Threads" showing below has someone looking for Unit 420A idaho advice...

And there is a long time between now and deer season. Make it a priority to get to your unit and put boots on the ground between now and then.

We all have to prioritize what is important in life, for some, hunting is at the top. Others, it's making money, time with family, etc. Finding the balance is part of the fun.

However, I don't think there are too many fellas that are going to sacrifice time, money, and being away from their family, only to give up the knowledge to those not willing to do the same.

As @Raghornklr said, you should take the time to open the thread you think is full of unit info.

if you are going with old/out of shape/ otherwise people unable to hike mountains then it may be worth looking for an outfitter with access to private land. Nothing like having a tractor pick up your animal and deliver it to the skinning shack.

And one of the worse things a new poster should NOT say is "not looking for your honey hole."
Tends to turn most others off.

Randy
Well Randy, what am I supposed to say when I’m really just looking for information on what the unit is like, not peoples specific hunting spots? Most of my unit is called craters of the moon. That’s not a normal unit lol

The unit I picked only has about 1,000ft difference of elevation so that’s do able for them. Want to still have the diy feel tho. Outfitter might be a future option tho. Ty

I’ve hunted it. For being flat it’s surprisingly hard to get around 😂
All the lava rock ups and downs is a real bitch.
Deer are widely scattered and not a lot of them or I couldn’t find them….
Probably better places but if you got the tag already it’ll beat the couch, maybe.

People need to accept that if they don't know anything, they may hunt for years unsuccessfully if they're unwilling to scout. That's part of hunting somewhere new.
Pay to hunt private, scout, or wing it. Nobody is handing out info for free on here. Least of all to an entire group who refuse to find a single day between them to scout.

I typically just ignore these kind of posts but I can't help it.......

Where do you think you should go look?

How is OnX not real helpful????

It's a desert, think about how to hunt in a desert. If you don't know, call the biologist. Do some actual homework first though or he might just hang up on you.

In all honesty if some other dude did exactly what you're doing, which is asking for a hand out publicly on an internet searchable forum for your favorite hunting unit how would you respond?

It's about as ridiculous as asking one of your buddies if you can kiss his old lady.....

Come on man, "spot burning"? Someone that has already drawn or bought the tag and are asking for general information about a unit. The same information that a biologist would probably give is hardly hot spotting. You guys need to lighten up a little. It wouldn't hurt to be a little less aggressive on deleting and locking post. Maybe a new leaf can be turned in 2025.
