Does anyone have experience with the Moultrie, Tactacams or any other brands where you can use data plan in season and then cancel and operate the camera in off season with a standard SD card ?

Wanting to get one for my FIL and I know he doesn’t want to pay for the subscription year round but would be cool if he can still use it in the off season without data plan.

Thanks

I run moultrie. I left a first generation edge camera out all last year after season but cancelled the plan. When I reactivated it in the late summer it uploaded all the photos it had taken while it was deactivated.

I assume you could do the same thing and if you want to check cameras, just reactivate for the last day of your cycle, grab the photos, and then deactivate again. It’s what I’m going to try this year.

My tactacam was left in the woods on the same tree for the last 3 years. Has the solar panel which is a nobrainer. You can use the camera without the plan. The pictures you pull off the sd card will be way better than any picture the camera sends you.

Its great leaving my cameras out all year. I have tons of pictures of bucks growing antlers and does with fawns. I used to go change cards and batteries but for $15 permonth and solar panels I never need to worry about it. Plus if the weeds grow and start triggering the camera hundreds of times a day I know about it before it fills my card with puctures of tall grass blowing. 1735394423485.jpeg

Same. This is the route I’d go as they still use cards you can check periodically

Whatever you do, don’t pick Browning. I’ve had multiple cameras fail under a year with short warranty offers and inconsistency in performance. My buddies run Tactacams with solar panels and they really like them.

I will also say that I had to pull the camera due to battery life issues… solar panel had battery but wouldn’t turn the camera on, neither would the brand new batteries I put in it. It started sending picture of the work bench the following afternoon. Customer service said I needed to update the software. 😐
