Carry more in your pack or break laws for survival?

Funny, this guy keeps getting responses. He made 1 dumb comment on the other thread and then doubled and tripled down on it. Now he starts a new thread with the same dumb comments. I call BS on this guy that he has ever gone into the woods 100% incapable of starting a fire. I would like to think NOBODY is that stupid. Or maybe, like he said, he stands alone on that. Personally, I have never started a fire during a fire ban or anytime outside of wet or snowy conditions, but I have always had a means to start a fire in my pack. Look back through my history of posts you see on here and you would see I am an ultralight guy. I make my own pack, tarp, down quilt etc. and now, my 4lb scoped rifle chambered in 6x45. Or my 4.5lb bow if archery hunting. I am gram weenie for sure but I will eat one less cheeseburger or lift weights if my fire starter kit is too heavy. This is literally the dumbest thing I have ever seen on here…..I think.
Yep!

Things don't always go so well. Unprepared people die of exposure regularly, make your choices appropriately.
I agree if you are hurt or out of food and in a bad storm and cannot get help you are going to need serious help to survive. That is a lot of "ands". I guess to stop the madness here I will agree that if all of that happens you will need fire!!! But again that is a lot of ands, after the first or second and I am getting out there somehow... Or contacting help.

@stumblinhorse, what exactly do you want to hear? You stated your opinion, and ask ours. Almost everyone has chose break law and live.
I didn't want to hear anything. I wanted to get this conversation out of that other thread. Then it mostly turned into a bunch of garbage. I didn't call anyone any names or say anyones opinion on here was wrong or stupid. Told no one what they said was stupid. I will take my only shot at RS. Seems like a bunch of BS for someone that just stated their, my, opinion. It makes everyone here look like no one will allow for someone that doesn't agree with them. My opinion is just that I won't carry fire starter when I am forbidden to use it. I will plan the best I can to survive without it. Simple. But here on this forum that or I am stupid or a "douche".

I appreciate you being straightforward and asking.

No harm in my opinion in starting this thread. I think it might just feel like piling on because the response is so one sided. If a name or two was used it doesn’t reflect on the entire membership of RS.

Things happen, but try not to create your own exigency, intentionally or through negligence. It’s harder to use emergency as defense against a criminal charge when you have a hand in creating the emergency.

But that said, really, if I get stuck in the backcountry, I’m confident no Wyoming jury will convict me for firing up the solo stove during a fire ban. Come on, prosecutor, let’s see how you look in the eyes of the state going to trial on this.

Stay hydrated, and be prepared to do what it takes to keep yourself at 98.6 for 24 hours, minimum.

Stick to your guns. Your point leans into idealism a bit much but personally I find that much more admirable then the general consensus of screw the law I'm starting a fire. I'd plan on carrying more because fire was prohibited. That said it's easy to claim you're selfless enough to not start the fire

Typically when open fires are banned, you can still use a wood burning stove with a FS approved spark arrester. With the light and portable stoves, you can almost always stay legal. So my my point of view, this is a non-issue.

So….You don’t carry fire starting equipment/devices because you don’t want to. Great. Now that we’ve got that out of the way…..

I’ve carried a bic lighter on my person every day since I graduated high school, and before that, any time I wasn’t at school. I carry it for the same reason I carry a leatherman and a pocket knife everywhere I go-with a few obvious exceptions of course. If I feel the need to use any of them, I’m damned sure going to use it, and to hell with anyone who’s questioning me on “why” I felt the need to have or use them.

If someone opts not to carry a lighter or matches because they “probably won’t need it”, that is no skin off my rear. No different than not carrying a firearm or wearing a seatbelt because they “might not need it”. With the world population being what it is, I’m certainly not bothered if someone has disregard for their personal safety. They didn’t seem to care, so why should I?

My hunting pack(s) always hold fire starting equipment and a spare lighter(and matches) in addition to the lighter I always carry on my person. They weigh virtually nothing, and could save my life some day. Doesn’t seem like a bad trade to me.

I will never be without the tools needed to start a fire . Why? Because I'm not stupid. If Im out for a day hike with my son and he ends up falling in a creek and soaking his clothes, it is my job to keep him safe. I would also have no issues with driving off road on public land to get some to medical care quicker if needed.

In regards to trespassing, I've done it. I was packing out a bear with my dad (mid 60s), pack out was slightly over 3 miles. We got to our last stream crossing before we made it to the truck and see that it had risen substantially from the time we had crossed that morning. My dad made it about 5 feet into the water before the current started to push him off his feet. Safe to say, my dad did not feel safe crossing and I was not about to goad him into trying. So we played it safe and cut across private to use a bridge. We got back to the truck safely and learned a good lesson on how fast streams can rise due to snow melt. I don't regret making the decision to break the law.

In the thread about the missing hunters I suggested that we take the tangent conversations to their own thread. Partly to stop derailing but also to give them a place to be discussed without getting lost in that thread. So please don’t think the op here is just harping his opinion, he simply did what I asked.

No, I don't carry it because I am forbidden to use it. It is obviously an item of safety equipment that everyone was taught at a young age to carry. But if it cannot be used, why carry it? Or for God's sake why don't all you people that will just willing break the law, fight for some language in the restrictions that allows for fires in life and death situations?

I wonder if a hypothetical survival situation mite be a lot like the people that flap there gums about how terrible America is, but haven’t been to an impoverished 3rd world country and seen real evil.

Once your actually there you mite think to yourself, ohh my ohh my I was wrong and wish I was more prepared, I get it now.

If it is an item of safety equipment, Then why wouldn’t I carry it? I probably won’t need it. But I’m never ever ever ever going to say to myself “ Phew! I really wish I hadn’t brought that lighter with me…. I almost used it back there”.

If just having an item in one’s possession makes them automatically feel compelled to use it, then I’d say they have some serious self control issues. Heaven forbid they ever find some junkie’s stash of drugs.
