Carry more in your pack or break laws for survival?

If you are super smart to assemble a fireless gear set for any and all conditions possible...I would just guess you are super smart enough not to just start random fires and understand when it would be life or death. The fact you have to completely remove all fire starting capabilities and in turn chance forgetting putting them back in your pack at some point....well it conflicts the first 5 words I typed.

Personally my life is more important than maybe starting a wildfire if conditions are such I would need a fire to survive.
Nah. He not that smart. He just start super random threads.

True survival, I consider the consequences and decide assuming I will be hammered. The adage "better to be judged by twelve than carried by six" comes to mind. The counter ballance is I would rather be carried by six than never want to look at myself in the mirror again, so this is not any anything goes proposition. Rather a survive with honor intact. The inverse that also holds is a life behind bars beats a life spent knowing fear of consequences kept me from doing the right thing.

Where that line is depends on the person and the situation with far too many variables to give a clear answer beforehand. Many people have no clue what the body can handle and will think the risk of death is high solely due to discomfort.

Now, the problem with high ieas is implementing them when the metal meets the meat. I state goals, I hope to never have the opportunity to live up to them.

I believe I take everything I need without fire in the areas I hunt. I archery hunt all over in CO. I think in my situation I have a fire less gear set. I guess that makes RS members insult me. I am ok with that. A little indication of where we are today is that basically no one else will think twice about breaking any rules. Someone “thinks” they need a fire, they just do it. I just won’t ever think I need a fire.

Consider this scenario... in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA). This is a rustic wilderness area in Northern Minnesota. There are many rules to keep the wilderness in tact.

Some rules are that you are only allowed to camp at designated camp spots and you are only allowed to have fires in the fire rings. You are also not allowed to cut live bushes and trees. They are good rules and serve a purpose.

Consider that you tip you canoe in cold water. You barely manage to make it to shore and are suffering hypothermia. Is there really a single person on this forum that would not build a simple shelter and start a fire??

Also, do you really think a warden would give you a ticket in those circumstances?? (note that said wardens have probably been party to airlifting dead bodies from that exact situation).

If I know I'm going to die, I'm starting a fire, trespassing, taking an ATV, shooting something out of season, whatever it takes. These things are trivial. Anyone would break any of those laws to save their wife or kids, why not yourself? I'm confident you could start a fire without burning 100,000 acres. I would also be as prepared as possible to avoid this in the first place.

Since the OP lives in Colorado....

"H:09 CHOICE OF EVILS

It is an affirmative defense to the crime
of____________________ that the conduct engaged in by the
(insert name of crime)
defendant was:

1. necessary as an emergency measure to avoid an
imminent
public or private injury,

2. which was about to occur because of a situation
occasioned or developed through no conduct of the
defendant, and

3. which was of sufficient gravity that, according to
ordinary standards of intelligence and morality, the
desirability and urgency of avoiding the injury clearly
outweighed the desirability of avoiding the injury sought
to be prevented by the statute defining (insert name of
crime)In addition to proving all of the elements of the
crime charged beyond a reasonable doubt, the prosecution
also has the burden to disprove the affirmative defense
beyond a reasonable doubt.

After considering all the evidence, if you decide the
prosecution has failed to disprove beyond a reasonable
doubt any one or more elements of the affirmative defense,
you must return a verdict of not guilty."

Perhaps this is a silly analogy, but here goes – it’s illegal to kill people, but you can do it in self-defense. Expand that concept to say that anything that you have to do to stay alive is what you should do. Having the ability to make fire doesn’t mean you’re going to do that. It’s better to have it and not need it….

Back on topic. With the stuff I always have in my pack I’d be able to start a fire if the situation called for it.

Funny, this guy keeps getting responses. He made 1 dumb comment on the other thread and then doubled and tripled down on it. Now he starts a new thread with the same dumb comments. I call BS on this guy that he has ever gone into the woods 100% incapable of starting a fire. I would like to think NOBODY is that stupid. Or maybe, like he said, he stands alone on that. Personally, I have never started a fire during a fire ban or anytime outside of wet or snowy conditions, but I have always had a means to start a fire in my pack. Look back through my history of posts you see on here and you would see I am an ultralight guy. I make my own pack, tarp, down quilt etc. and now, my 4lb scoped rifle chambered in 6x45. Or my 4.5lb bow if archery hunting. I am gram weenie for sure but I will eat one less cheeseburger or lift weights if my fire starter kit is too heavy. This is literally the dumbest thing I have ever seen on here…..I think.
