Just wanted to share my wife's story with the hope that more people will consider adding an aed to their first aid gear. I know their not practical for backpack hunts but for a lot of situations I think they are a good idea. 2 weeks ago my 34 year old healthy fit wife went into cardiac arrest at the gym. She was not particularly exerting herself and we have been working out regularly for years. She did not have any known health problems although now we are doing genetic testing as it is suspected that she has a form of arrithmia. Our gym has an aed and thanks to our good friends who were quick to respond she survived after receiving a shock from the device. She now has an implanted defibulator and is on the road to recovery and adjusting to the idea of this device for the rest of her life. I have ordered the same model that was used on her so that we are prepared if someone needs it. The device is a philips heartsmart and they are available online for about $1200. It is a lot of money but I am very grateful that there was one available when my wife needed it. Like I said just something to consider probably 1 in million chance of needing it but it makes you think when something like this happens to your family.
