Anyone else had a carbon fiber tripod break in the cold. I broke a slik and a Gitzo(Luckily the Gitzo wasn't mine) over the last two years.

I broke the leg clean off the silk right where it meets the twist lock. The Gitzo broke when I slide the leg back in, it had a little ice on it from freezing rain. But it has made me change what I use.

Haven’t had that happen yet but have only had my Slik in low 30’s temps.
What are you using now and have you tested it in the same cold weather?

I was hunting a late season cow tag this year and it was cold and snowy every day. One day it was -9 when I left the truck, I couldn’t get some legs on my silk 634 tripod to extend that morning. Nothing broke, but when I was wrestling with it I definitely felt like a few times something was close to snapping.

We have sold hundreds of the Promaster XC525C tripod to hunters and birders that are out in any weather. We give a lifetime no fault warranty. We have NEVER had one come back for this reason. It's a 9 layer carbon fiber tripod

I'm running this set up that I picked up from them. It gets used a lot in very cold snowy conditions. So far it hasnt skipped a beat. Love it other then I wish it was a little taller. Im a taller guy and cant glass standing with my binos...

I have used a Gitzo for years. It gets fairly cold here (-10 opening day of rifle) and I've never had an issue. Coldest I have used it was -30 ambient.

It seems to me the common denominator is Ryan Avery ;)

Patience is not my strongest quality.

I think both of these broke because of moisture issues. They got wet and semi froze up.

I need to barrow @Justin Crossley Gitzo next season. HAHA

That could be. Its usually just super cold here. Not real wet.

I'm sure Justin would be more than happy to let you break... I mean borrow it.

I actually put a Gitzo logo on my Slik tripod as a decoy so you wouldn't steal my good one.

And, I agree. The common demonitator is Ryan Avery. I once heard a story of him breaking an anvil......

I’ve not had a issue with my slik. It is a lever lock though. I know they’re pricey but have you looked at a really right stuff tripod? They’re very beefy but supposed to be the best of the best.

I've snapped the middle aluminum clamp housing while closing the flip lock on a slik 824 on a cold morning last winter. I called slik and they sent a new piece out to me for a small cost, but good customer service overall in my experience. I've found it's a balance of tight but not too tight when adjusting the Allen screws for tension on the cfl's.

I've had the pro master for about 5 years now and it's bomb proof. That said I'm looking for something more rigid now that I'm digiscoping more.

We have excellent Manfrotto tripods that would be more ridgid then the Promaster. Not designed for back packing though

I've been meaning to call you about this. What model are you referring to? I was leaning towards the AMT models.
