has anyone replace a factory barrel with a carbon wrapped barrel and if so how much did it cost? Was it worth it?

Don’t have one yet, but these folks can answer your questions re. Cost. I too would be interested in results.

Interested also. How durable is the carbon in real world conditions? I’m not particularly easy on my gear.

Just replaced a savage SA bull barrel 308 with a carbon6 7WSM. It cost about $900 the way I had it spec’d out with a prefit, custom reamer (done by them), Cerakote, threading, etc. min options probably closer to $700. All that was in the barrel price from their webpage. Wait time was 4 months-ish.

For the savage it was a simple do it at home replacement with $100 in tools (go gauge and barrel vice).

It is 3lb lighter than same profiled steel barrel. Not positive on the ruggedness yet. Not as light as a sporter steel barrel, maybe 1/2lb heavier but can thread a suppressor on it without issue.

Jury is still out, but I think I’ve checked the cool kid carbon box for a bit and will explore lighter weight steel flutted options at half the cost for my next build. I am happy with it, but pretty pricey.

Hope that helps.

Figure $950 plus or minus including the cost of the barrel.

They are very durable. Not as durable as solid steel for impact, but durable enough to deal with most conditions. Actually, they deal with a horse rolling on them better than all steel.

Most rebarrel jobs should also include some cash to have the action cleaned up.

I'm in contact with them about it. Looking for others that might have done it already.

I replaced a factory remington barrel last year with a carbon six and it ended up costing me right at $1000. I had to buy go/no-go gauges, barrel wrench, and barrel clamp. It was a fun project and it shoots well!

I have an old savage 110 in 243 that was given to me. Been thinking about rebareling in 7-08 or 6.5-284. I have to be careful or I’ll end up with 3-4 barrels for this “budget build”. I’m looking at carbon so I can hunt suppressed without hauling a boat anchor around.

If you get a prefit from carbonsix most gunsmiths will charge around $80 to install a new barrel, if the stock needs opened up that will be an added charge. If you don’t get a prefit barrel chambering and threading is usually around $300.

I had a carbon six prefit installed for $80 by my gunsmith on a howa action that didn’t need trued up, it’s a tack driver.

I just did a build with a Bartlein CF barrel and am sure pleased with how it turned out. The barrel was $700 and then whatever your smith charges to chamber/crown the barrel. Seems to the cost to chamber/crown runs from about $250-$350 depending on the smith, cost will go up if you have any work done on the action.

The barrel blank is double the cost of stainless for 1 to 1-1/2 pound weight savings. You’re going to pay somebody to thread chamber and crown, either a smith or the barrel maker, regardless of whether you go the remage route or a shouldered prefit. If it’s going on a mediocre action like factory Remington you’ll need the remage option with the barrel nut to get your headspace set.
I’ve been mulling it over for weeks and am not sure the weight savings and cool factor are worth it. For $1000 I can get a chambered bartlein stainless and still have $350 towards a custom action.

My carbonsix barrels are great. Good groups and very capable of holding up to abuse(3ish years of field use). Costs as others have posted seem fairly close to my experience. Keep in mind Black Friday sales have been consistent the last few years. Also, don’t rule out something like dracos. Light weight but not the tacticool look like we’ve been going for the last couple years lol but lifetime guaranteed. Mine groups well and is also light weight. Pictures included because they make everything better.

Get a prefit and skip the chamber and threading cost.

My experience was less than $950 for barrel and smithing costs on both rifles. Also scratches and dings are less noticeable or prevalent on my carbon barrels vs stainless cerakoted and Duracoated rifles.

Blanks from Proof or bartlein will run you $700ish, and a good smith will charge $250-300 for installation. If your action needs truing, plan on additional $200 or so.

Prefit or blank?

I can't do the work in my own shop for less than about $750-850 (cost of reamer plus barrel). May be able to shave a little if I rent a reamer. Cost goes up if I want something special with the reamer. I'm not paying for my shop time either.

I swapped my Winchester M70 24" .30-06 barrel with a Bartlein 24" CF barrel. All said and done, I think the rifle is almost the same weight. The CF barrel is much, much thicker and dumps heat like a champ. The real reason was accuracy. The stock gun was, at best a 1.5 MOA gun - which is to say that it sometimes threw a group near an inch, sometimes near 2 inches, but generally about 1.5 inches or so at 100 yards. That was crushing for my confidence - I often took other rifles to the range with the M70 just to prove to myself I could still shoot.

So, here we are, $1000 dollars of custom barrel (the blank and the chambering), $650 of custom stock (McM Game Scout @ 12.5" LOP) later, my M70 can now shoot about as well as my stock Tikka T3x. ;-)

My point of reference for the heat comment:
I've used my MSv3 on my Tikka T3x in 7mmRM with no issues, collecting data from multiple factory and hand loads with nary a problem. That's substantially more powder down a substantially less massive barrel. I put it on my .30-06 and it damn near melted the strap...which I noticed when it deformed/loosed to the point that the bayonet fell off the end...in about 10 shots.

Nice thing about a prefit, it’s already chambered and threaded, so no additional cost for that.

After looking yesterday Carbon Six has their barrels on sale. At the sale price, with chambering, they are only slightly more money than a good stainless chambered barrel.
~$650 if a smith charges 300 for chambering, $695 for the shouldered prefit carbon six. Carbon might work with those numbers.

I think that’s their usual price, always discounted, come Black Friday they‘ll probably offer 10% off the $695.
