Nice thing about a prefit, it’s already chambered and threaded, so no additional cost for that.
I realize that. I was wondering which direction Goatie went to get a lower price. I don't usually go with a prefit since the action I am using rarely has a prefit available. I also pretend that I'm a better machinist than they are and think my chambering, etc. is higher quality. It probably isn't, but it makes me feel warm inside when rifles I barreled shoot little groups.

So the prefit route is between $700 and $850?

Who’s doing the work concerns me as well. I’ve been cutting metal for 30 years and the accepted gunsmithing practices make me cringe.

I’m not complaining, my prefit shoots extremely well but I get what your saying.

Prefit or blank?

I can't do the work in my own shop for less than about $750-850 (cost of reamer plus barrel). May be able to shave a little if I rent a reamer. Cost goes up if I want something special with the reamer. I'm not paying for my shop time either.

A few years ago they did smithing for a pretty nominal fee. I don’t think they do it anymore, but threading and chambering and mounting at the time was less than $150ish if you bought the blank. I can only justify splurging on this hobby when I find good deals and both rifles seemed to be a good deal when I was considering a lighter barrel would’ve been more when including costs to machining flutes. Might cost a bit more now but honestly I haven’t researched as my latest build is a totally different direction.

I re-barreled a Savage 116 action with a Proof Research 24” 7mm Rem Mag 1:9 twist. DIY install. Stockys sells the prefit barrels ($800-$900 I believe).
Performance wise, I love how consistent the rifle shoots. 5-shot groups no problem. Also it has been easy to handload for—I attribute some of this to the stiffness of the barrel lessening variability between anti-nodes making for more consistent shots even when changing load variables.
Also, shoots most factory ammo well, and some superb.
I have not hunted with this rifle yet, so I cannot comment on durability.
