Was diskin corn ground today when vet called me asked me to tag along with her after I milked this evening. Asked me to bring my tranq gun and darts. She meve told me why just assumed had a wild cow calf or bull on the loose.

So come 615 I meet her at her home jump in her truck and we head out to a mans farm. Get there dude had about 45 sticker calves 5-700# around feed troughs. Nothing out of the ordinary at the moment. He told me to walk down through them and look at each 1's right side something was sticking out of 1 of his calves but he couldn't make out what it was.

After a little peaking and digging around I finally found out what he wasn't sure of

I knocked the calf down wth a dart and some meds. Vet made a couple cuts and eased the arrow out. Gas had built up big time. Calf was suffering had. While he was knocked out asleep she just went ahead and injected meds into the vein of the steers neck and put him out for good.

Apparently a little brat of a 12year old up the road has shot his calf just for the fun of it. Not gonna end up pretty for that family if they don't come up with a couple grand. Bow season hasn't even opened here in Virginia yet.

We people rely on cattle as much to take care of us as they rely on us to take care of them. Though we make beef of them they do not deserve to go through this. No wonder hunting permission is a thing of the past and you can't blame a farmer at all For it because you never know what hoodlum will turn up next

Yeah there are always a very small minority that make a group look bad. I hope the rancher teaches the family a lesson, crappy parenting there.

That little menace should be locked up, forced to take a psych evaluation and after release, made to pay sweat restitution and learn about animals. If that were kid this wouldn't have happened, bad parenting right there. Dad is gonna pay, he better teach that little Hershey squirt a harsh lesson.

Kid was seen chasing the mans calves through the field with his bow by neighbor farmer then owner of calves called the step dad Asking him about it as then the step dad told Him the kid had shot 1 Earlier that Day.

The step daddy has said they have since shipped Him off to elsewhere. Think they are going to have him evaluated. Said all he talks and thinks about is seeing stuff die. Said he got in a fight at school and Expelled his parents Said when he come home and said he should have just killed the boy but he will just do it when he goes back to school.

Step daddy told me personally tonight that they try to raise him better but he just cannot be controlled said they had to take further action because he was uncontrollable. The step daddy seemed like a Good guy in a bad position. Offered
To pay vet bill there on the spot and willing to cover anything else that comes along.

Sounds like the little dude needs some help, hope some is found. It's not always cut and dried with this stuff, an ass whuppin' behind the woodshed works for some, makes others worse. Hopefully they can catch it before it's something other than livestock.

I hate to be that guy, but what good comes of posting those pictures? All I can see if that it serves is feeding the anti's rhetoric.

On the flip side of this, the pictures and story strike a sensitive nerve in me from seeing an animal suffering (I'm assuming others too). One thing I'll take from this is a bit more concern for ranchers. I'm not one to show any disrespect for their property, but I may go further out of my way to lend them a hand if given the opportunity now. It's just another thing I can relate to them on.

I agree with you that posts like this get used by irrational idiots that are out to ban every activity that casts a shadow. Sometimes it baits them in to discrediting themselves when they have to cough up a source, though.

I don't really see what this has to do with hunting and permission at all? That wasn't a hunter accidentally shooting a cow or something. That was a disturbed person/teen intentionally shooting a calf with a field point arrow in an act/timeframe unrelated to hunting. You wouldn't associate kids shooting out street lights with a pellet gun with hunters would you? This is no different in terms of the association to hunting.

Some people are broken from the factory... kid needs to be away from society and nurtured for a long, long time.

This however is not a "hunting image"...it is not a reflection of hunters in any way.

You might not make the assossiation with hunters but I can assure you a lot of farmers will in a situation like this. Hate to see any animal suffer like that.

Not into beating kids, but in this instance a phone book would get utilized to ring some bells.

I don't know any farmer that would associate a kid messing around with a bow with any sort of hunting.

Maybe someone that doesn't know the story and sees a picture of the arrow sticking out of the side of a calf would associate that, but as soon as they were told it was a kid then I think that association is all but gone. Give them the entire story as it has been presented here and the connection isn't even remembered.

Completely agree. Not trying to make potential excuses for this kid, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out he's already suffered some serious abuse in his young life.

I feel sorry for the Step Dad. Chances are he didn't ruin the kid but is shown the door if he attempts to discipline him. That's what I call serious baggage.

I hate to think what my father would have done to me if i had been stupid enough to do something like that. The whole family needs a lesson in respect for other's property. Glad you were there to help the Rancher and the vet.

God Bless
