CANOE for solo paddler and dog??

Figured I would turn to the experts.
Looking for a good stable canoe I could use for small/medium lake fishing and class 1,2 stuff on rivers. Need to carry a dog......golden retriever and I'd also like to be able to camp out of it.
Been doing research but figured I'd ask for real life experiences.

I'd look at anything with the name old town on it. Have used a discovery since I was a kid. They make solo offerings as well. I'm also big fan of sit on top kayaks for the same application you mentioned if you're open to alternate types of boats

Tandem kayak? I have a couple tandem Old Town kayaks. In my opinion they are way more stable than a canoe and work great for hauling kids.

It depends what you really want out of a boat and are willing to spend. A NuCanoe is a great option for capacity, durability and a mid range price. They just don’t paddle particularly fast if you need to cover lots of still water.

Wenonah makes an awesome canoe if you want more paddling speed and lighter weight but it comes at a higher cost. Those canoes are the boundary waters default. Fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon fiber canoes are a whole level higher in performance to the plastic boats everyone runs now. I’ve had Kevlar, Aluminum, carbon fiber and plastic canoes/kayaks and I vastly prefer Kevlar and carbon fiber if I’m paddling much distance.

Ive canoed over 40 years and have owned many types of canoes. I just picked up a nucanoe and I love it . Take dog fishing, duck hunting in it. Can stand up. very stable

Our family has used an old town canoe. Deer and duck hunting, but no overnights. Great for the family on the lakes. You could always pick up a used one and see how you like it before diving in to some of the nicer stuff.

I’ve used a 14.5 model as a single with solid success duck hunting, sight casting for redfish, and accessing deer hunting areas hauling a climber. Haven’t taken through rapids but have cross choppy saltwater bays relatively well.

Ultralight kevlar/carbon if your rich and very careful (trim the dogs nails b4 heading out) - The 14 footer I really want weighs 25# (twentyfivepounds).
More typical plastic boats (OT, Mad River, Wenonah, Grumman!) if you're rough, cheap, and can carry the extra weight.
Be sure to pay for a proven design, though. if the boat is no fun to paddle (heavy with crappy lines) you won't use it.
