Hey everyone, I hunt out of a tree stand primarily and am looking to start filming with my Sony a6400. I have a 50m F1.8 for low light but was looking at the 18-105 F4 for a primary lens. Do you guys run this lens and if so what’s your opinion on it?

It depends.. when you say a tree stand, what distances do you usually encounter game at? Are you in thick foliage? The 70-200 mentioned above is a fantastic choice albeit expensive, and with the crop factor of your camera may be overkill. Weight can also be a consideration.

The 18-105 is a decent budget lens for sure. It would probably give you an idea if you like taking wide angle or telephoto pictures more, and inform your buying decision/lens collection for future lenses.

It depends on what habitat you’ll be hunting. But you’ll want a lens with a wide range. 18-105 or 150. Starting at 70 will prohibit you from getting your shots on camera inside 20 yards. I have a 18-55 and 55-250. So I can cover a wide range.

105mm might let you fill the frame with a deer out to say 30 yards, but if you want to be able to reach through the woods and capture critters you want a little more telephoto. 200 is probably a good minimum on the long end, but 300 or 400 is ideal.

If you're mostly looking to catch animals within bow range 18 to 105 is probably just fine.
