Why does my Canon camera create a jpg and a cr2 file for each photo when I put them on my laptop? What is the purpose and can I turn it off? Thanks

You seems to be absolutely right.cr2 is Canon Raw.
In the settings on your camera you can set what file types you want saved.
Raw is useful if you do more post processing than maybe crop or color balance.
If you just want eye-popping snapshots, stick with jpgs.
