Anyone have any success calling in bears in the fall? I’ve heard a fawn distress or similar call can bring in a curious/hungry bear. Thoughts? Thanks, Mike

I’ve called in a few with lost calf calls. No more often than I’ve used those calls I’d say they’re pretty effective.

I know a few people who have called them in. It can be a strategy especially during the bear rut. That’s mainly when people do it I’ve seen. The fall seams to not be as conducive with so many berrys around. Also be super carefully if your in griz country. Around here in Montana I don’t suggest calling for that very reason.

I've called them in several times using anything from pup distress to a cow call. You don't have to sound perfect, just enough to peak their curiosity. I've also spoke about this very topic on the Rich Outdoors podcast and Living Country In the City. Calling can be very effective.

The elk action was nil so a friend and I just started bugling back and forth for the heck of it. Called in a bear.

I cow called a bear in unknowingly last September, some other hunters with an elevated position shot said bear a few hundred yards behind me. Keep your head on a swivel.

It does work, but as others have said, they come in looking for an easy meal. Guess what, you’re it. Watch your six and don’t get so caught up in the calling that you’re not paying attention.

I use both open reed and closed reed hand calls. Keep screaming non-stop while sounding scared and pitiful and you're likely to get a response if a bear is nearby and your scent is covered.
