California second bear tag

This is great news but be prepared. The BEAR League has promised to push for legislation to end all bear hunting if the Commission voted to approve the second tag.

Now is the time to join the American Bear Foundation if you haven’t already. We have a California Chapter and need your support to kill anti hunting legislation early in the process because God help us if it ever gets on a ballot.

Count me in. This may not increase the take substantially, but it will add revenue for Fish and Wolves which will hopefully go to bear research and management.

Probably not but I'm sure it will help with some pay raises and new trucks!

I read through all the public comments, and the craziest one was from Bear League, calling all hunters 'pathetic'. It's clear to me that she's a nasty woman and willing to play hard ball.

Did she elaborate on what makes us “pathetic”?

I love to put it on them/challenge people like them by asking why they love bears/ lions/ wolfs ect so much but hate deer/ elk and others animals so much. They always say I don’t hate deer! I say sure you do! You want predators on the landscape unchecked which in return decimates healthy deer/elk populations. I doubt it has much effect but I’ve seen it sure make a few people go “oh shit” at least for a minute

Yup when people are speaking on emotions anger/ insults it’s because they are backed into a corner and are loosing the fight. Seen it happen professionally many times too. Real good idea to insult people to get your way….

The second bear that is horse crap they need to open a spring season and get hound back in. What is the bear population estimate ? What was the 1700 bear a year cull based on ? (Population ) what is the population objective ? We have bee keepers in Bay Area bounties having to put electric fences up right now . The amount of bears is insane .

Some more changes on deck for 2027-2028.

1. regional bear zones with separate harvest limits
2. 80 pound size limit for cubs
3. concurrent deer and bear general opener for all x zones
4. no gap between archery bear season and general bear season in all zones
5. 10 calendar days to validate tag and pull tooth

Not sure I support 3 and 4. I wouldn't want dudes blowing out bucks right before the season.

Is it not a step in the right direction? The rule changes required to add a spring season are a massive lift and hounds were banned by the state senate and assembly so unless they can reverse that with a new bill and get a governor to sign it hounds will never be back. As far as I’m aware the 1,700 was based on what was a sustainable harvest rate based on old population estimates. The new models show we could harvest way more and keep the population the same but we haven’t come close to those numbers for years so it doesn’t really matter.
Last I checked bear huntings been closed in the Bay Area for years so maybe a push to open that area up is something you should push for. I believe the amount of bears is insane, I’m up north where we have 4/square mile.

Good to know.
1. That’ll be interesting to see if some regions actually fill their quotas
2. Interesting. I’ve seen sows with cubs that size. Honestly a weight limit is tough to enforce. They should make it like other states that define a cub as less than a year old.
3. That’s good. the number of deer hunters complaining about seeing bears early in the x-zone seasons that seem to vanish later on is pretty high so hopefully they can put a dent up there.
4. I’m not sure how much that’ll affect the woods. It seems there are few people that will go out to intentionally bear hunt.

- Yes the bear hunting area needs to be the entirety of the state. And the cull objective should be 3000+ and at those numbers regulations should be relaxed to make the damn objective .
- We likely have 5x the bear population that the 1700 number was modeled for and also understand the 1700# was tempered for likely kills that accompany hound hunting. My understanding at the time it was assumed that 1700 actually equaled 2500 .
TBH I’m sick of “steps in the right direction”
Their science is bad , their intentions are bad, and they are only doing this because too many people know how poorly the state manages game and there are bigger forces at play that are forcing their hand .
