Buying NV points

Been dreaming about NV for a few years. Being from Montana where a 150" mulie is a helluva deer I'd like to venture out of state just to even see a stud buck.

I don't have time to hunt this year but I'd like to try next year or maybe the following year.

I got all signed up for the NV site and went to look at tags. I see the option for the $10 point but it wants me to buy the $155 hunting and fishing license...

So to buy a point I need to drop 155 bucks for something I won't even use?

But if I actually pick a few glory tags and apply I only need the hunt/fish if I draw?

Thanks!

Ya, NV is expensive. I bought points in 4 states this year, but I'm skipping NV. Couldn't quite justify it When I barely have time to hunt in my home state.

You buy the license when you apply for hunts or just for points. Nevada doesn't have many easy to draw unit either so you'll need to beat the odds with luck or be prepared to play for long time

Yes, just like most states, you have to buy the license to get the points. If you opt to be refunded if you don’t draw, you won’t get the points. I think it’s a bad idea to put in for points rather than your 5 choices. If you draw and really can’t make the hunt you can surrender your tag prior to the beginning of the season and get your points back. You will have to eat the tag fee.

Yes, and if they didn't charge that license fee, the odds would go from terrible to astronomically horendously awesomely horrible. If you want to hunt better than 150 bucks, just look to Wyoming and Idaho, much closer and those bucks are available on easy to get tags. Even many NV archery tags are no cake walk in the odds department. In short, I don't think NV lines up with your goals. I hope this is helpful.

True this. Low point options in many states. Nevada is just for guys with cash who want to throw their name in a very full hat.

For archery look at Utah as a solid option.

if You want to hunt Nevada you need to be willing to wait 5+ years to draw some of the easiest to draw rifle tags or a decent archery tag. Add up the cost of applying all those years and see if it’s worth it. At the same time, while you are waiting to draw the way their system works you also have a chance to draw an amazing/premium type tag (albeit a tiny chance). Check out Randy Newberg or GoHunt YouTube channels and they talk about strategy for applying to Nevada. Personally I am not putting in until I’m a little more set financially because the tag will be expensive by the time you actually draw it, and I have other hunts in the works for the next few years.

My situation might help you make up your mind. I'm at 17 points in NV....and the elk units I'm trying to draw put me at a 1.6% chance of drawing...THATS after 18 yrs of apps. There are units like the Jarbridge where my odds go up to 30%...but the season opens aug15th and closes before sept- poor success rates due to the crummy dates.

Now deer is a little better odds wise as they give out more tags....whatever you do just have to factor in point creep as they are a chitpile of guys ahead of you.

$1100 bucks if you want a big game combo, $600 or so for deer. There's nothing free or cheap anymore.

Yep. The only way I can see it being worth the $$$ is if you apply for archery or some of the easiest draw rifle tags for deer. That way you can expect to draw every 5 years or so. Otherwise it’s not worth the time and money. Even then it’s pretty questionable whether it’s worth it, although it seems like the hunts would be quality given how few tags they give out in most units.

I don't know where or how you're hunting, but 150" deer in Montana are pretty common in some areas. With your objection to the NR price for Nevada, have you looked into a new strategy for how or where you're hunting deer in Montana? Going to another state is awesome from the adventure standpoint but finding a big deer the first time you hunt a new area is harder than finding one in a place you can hunt every year.

NV is expensive, but you have a chance to draw every year. They just square your points and thats how many chances you have to draw
