Business of trophy hunting and fair chase

I’m not judging the guy, by having a personal opinion.
I’m actually psyched for the dude...plus(I believe) a lot of that governors tag money goes to conservation.

But...a dozen guys babysitting a bull so this guy can be lead in to make the shot, isn’t fair chase.

Legality has little to do with fair chase, imo.
A guy can hunt an elk, diy solo in the backcountry with a stick bow...without the proper license...and that’s a more ‘fair chase’ scenario that what the jimmy johns guy did to get his big giant elk head to hang on a wall.

Just my opinion, of course.

I know we’re always hesitant to be critical of other hunters that are legally hunting, even if we disagree, but I’ll say it. Everything about that Jimmy Johns bull is gross. I feel bad for Trent from Rogue Outdoorsman who was actually hunting that bull for the last few years. It’s like paying 20 guys to tie up the heavy weight champ so you can knock him out and call yourself the champ. I will never understand the mindset of a man that can be proud of something like that.

Happy the money goes to conservation, but a sad end for a great bull. Looked like an army camped out on him.
Big JJ couldn't walk to the kill site.
I agree, under normal circumstances, this could have been Trent's bull.

Thanks for sharing the video. That was definitely the business of trophy hunting. Did Trent get a bull yet? I would have loved to see that go to an archer vs 1,000 yard shot.

He was in a tough spot and has some good karma coming his way.

I only read the first 10 posts and align with those. OK by me but now how I wanna do it. The money going back into hunting is good.

I’ve had a few of my friends of late find some exceptional animals and then have these outfitters show up with their armies, and it sucks for the diy guy...but no ones breaking the law or even the laws of fair chase in these instances. So it’s pretty hard to be a hater, but easy not be a joiner.

No different than any of these "once and a lifetime tags" we all draw and the tag holder shows up with 10 of his best friends, cameras all over the place etc.

Yep, I’ve seen that happen around here with our late buck hunts . Guys want to make the most on the tag, and they have a bunch of brothers and cousins and uncles who wanna help, so who’s to say they’re any better or worse than these outfitters.

I’ve been following this story and thread passively. Didn’t feel too strongly either way until now. Agreed with most of the comment line on ‘glad to see the money going to conservation etc.’ and ‘to each his own’. Maybe I just didn’t understand what these situations are actually like. Now after watching it, I’m just embarrassed. For a whole host of reasons. From the lead up, to the shot, to the after party. I’m embarrassed for the sport in general. Yes, you can call me a hater. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’m disgusted by the whole thing. Maybe it’s just me. I feel for Trent. He handled the situation with total class. More than I know I would have. And yes, I know it’s all legal (except the part about the guide services physically blocking out others from public land).

Man this just feels like the prostitution of wildlife to me. I really don’t like it but it’s not my tag or my money. Legal and right aren’t the same thing

In the end all the auctions to the highest bidders, special governors tags for cronies, group killing ect ect will do more harm for our sport in the way of disenfranchising the common hunter then all the money those tags put back into the conservation pool.

I have mixed feelings but at least happy to see some people with big money putting it toward wildlife mgt and conservation.
