Burning in Seek outside SXL

Thats what I was thinking, Im sure Ill have to leave the doors open till its thoroughly burned in. But I had to ask, first time with one of these ultralight stoves.

I recommend that after you get a good first burn and cool down - flip the pipe over and burn again to get a good even temper over the entire length.

Yeah, It's my understanding that the burn-in is just to temper the pipe, not to burn off anything from the stove.

Don't get a grand idea like I had on my second stove pipe and think you'll temper the top end with an acetylene torch. There's a fine line between heating it to that nice dull red color and distorting the metal by nearly melting it.

helpful to use a second person to roll the pipe the first time, and also helpful to use a few soup/beer cans (like one where each hand contacts the pipe) to get an even roll on it the first time.

Check on the torch lol. Good Idea with the beer cans, any reason to drink some beer ;-)

So I got the redcliff up and assembled the stove, the stove came with an 11 foot stove pipe, what a pain in the butt trying to roll it, eventually put a 2" piece of conduit in the middle of it and rolled it around, still it looks like I took a ball peen hammer to the darn thing. I saw almost all the dents came out when I got a fire going. Can I cut the pipe down? 11 feet seems way to long, like to get it down to around 9ish, if nothing for the fact that it wouldnt catch the wind near as much.

I thought the Redcliff was using an 8' pipe?

I believe one of the other members (Akicita) is using 8 ft pipe with the SXL in his Redcliff. That's giving him 2 feet above the peak of the shelter.

I'm using 9 ft pipe with the SXL in the 6-man tipi. That gives me 2 ft above the peak. Seems to work well. No burn holes so far.

I went about the same route - 8' pipe with a LO 18" stove in a Redcliff.

11' seems like overkill.

Yes - I am finding that 8 feet is working well for me in all weather conditions. Anything longer and you'll have problems keeping it secure in high winds.

Any idea if I can cut the stove pipe? Seems like I should just be able to score it and cut it to a more workable length?

Yes it is easy to cut, wear leather gloves and use fairly sharp scissors. I wonder how you got 11 feet ?

I bought the set up from JD outfitters in Jackson Hole, got a good deal on it, he told me the pipe was 11 feet, never thought much of it till I tried to roll it, what a pain in my ass. Ill cut it down tomorrow. Roger on the gloves, Im keeping a pair in the stove bag.

Another question for you guys that have the redcliff, how many tent stakes came with your tent?
