For what it’s worth, I shot a moose with a 280gr LRX out of a 338-378 at ~2900fps, lengthwise, from about 20 yards and recovered the bullet in the moose’s hip and it looked like it retained its weight like a normal Barnes.
I’m not an Alaska resident nor have I been there enough to consider myself an expert, BUT I have had fantastic results from the 200gr AccuBond as well. I shot my last moose with 212 Eld-x and got the infamous grenade result. So I went back to the AccuBond like I had done before. I actually just buy the factory Nosler Custom Load with this bullet and have done very well with it. Might be worth a look.
We shot 4 Moose this year using Barnes 180 gr TTSX in 300 Win Mags. My brother in law and I shot our two 30 seconds apart at 450 yards after waiting an hour for them to stand up. We each recovered one bullet and picture perfect performance.
Thanks Perry! The Accubond is definetly on my give it a try list & it just moved to thye top!
Trust you guys are staying warm. I'm getting tired of -20* but know your -40 makes this feel balmy!
Thanks ALL. Sorry I missed page 2!
If the Accubonds don't shoot some type of Barnes will likely be next on my list to try.
Passinggass, I have a box of the ELD-X in 200gr but I've heard enough stories now to give me pause with them. Maybe good practice ammo or maybe save them for a caribou hunt.
The Nosler factory ammo may be an option to play before I get my reloading gear vsetup in our new to us house. Thanks
Lots of Barnes and Etip love here. Anyone ever try the appealingly similar Hornady GMX?
I’ve had limit experience, but so far lm liking the 180 outta my 300 WM.
Have killed several moose with 180 AB’s out of a 300WM. Killed even more moose with a 308 slinging 165 AB’s. Flawless performance on every one of them. Always waited for a broadside shot or took a head shot at closer ranges. Only shot one brown bear but that was with a 300gr A frame. I’d be hard pressed to believe a 180 or 200 AB wouldn’t work perfectly for what you are looking to do. See what your gun likes and roll with it.
Don’t know from experience cause my season got gutted but from what I’ve read you can’t go wrong with the OG round Nosler Partition. However I feel like the tip of the bullet is softer than usual, just racking one in my Weatherby the tips get jacked up.
Another Barnes fan here. I'm on an 18 animal 1 shot kill streak with the TTSX 180 guns from a 300 RUM. Most recent was Alaskan moose at a fair poke. He died in sight of me.
Another vote for the Barnes TTSX. My hunting partner shot his bull moose at 130ish yards through the heart. It perfectly cored the heart after hitting a rib on the way in and we recovered the bullet just under the hide on the opposite side. He was using the factory loaded ammo for a .300WM. I use the same bullet type for my 7mmRM and have great results.
I dropped my Alaskan moose this year with the 175g LRAB out of a 28 Nosler at 100yds. Bull took 15 steps and was done. Entrance wound was dang near the size of my fist, passed through the right rib cage, through the lungs/vitals, exited through the left rib cage and stopped under neath the skin. Here is the recovered bullet. I was very impressed with its performance.
I use a .300 RUM but I only use 200 gr Accubonds on moose, the last three moose were all pass through broadside no bullets recovered behind shoulder. I switched to Accubonds after three bad experiences with 200 gr Barnes TTSX on other moose and elk.
If I has a .300 Win Mag I would shoot 180 or 200 gr Accubonds.
My wife shot her bull using a 200 grain Accubond out of a 30-378. The first shot grazed his neck and knocked him out and second shot killed him instantly. I wouldn't us anything else on a moose or bear.
