Like Taper Pin stated have Alex or Ryan Pierce build you exactly what you want. If you want a custom why mess around with anything else.

Not annoying at all. Great question. I was thinking probably a nightforce NXS or NX8.

There are practical limits but I'd rather spend $4000 on a scope than a rifle. If I had the sort of budget you're proposing I'd grab a Tangent Theta Hunter 3-15x50 scope and use the remaining money on the rifle. Which would probably still get you a Seekins PH2 or possibly a Seekins Element.

If I could get a full refund for everything gun-related I own right now, I'd be spending less on rifles and more on scopes.

That is my philosophy, too. Most of my rifles were cheaper than the scope sitting on them. I was going to make an exception this time. Because I figured nightforce was good enough. The only problem I see buying a high-end production rifle as opposed to a custom is that all of their barrels are longer than I want. Since I want to run suppressed. The last thing I want to do is buy a $3,000-$4,000 production rifle and have to immediately spend a grand getting it rebarreled. I would end up spending the same as a custom. However, I may not rule out going that route. I am trying to be open-minded. Lol

Agreed on that, it's very annoying. If the rifle had a carbon barrel it'd require a rebarrel but if it was steel, it could be cut down. Though fluted barrels that get cut down look a bit goofy sometimes, less so with a suppressor on the end I imagine.

I don't mind goofy. I was under the impression you couldn't cut down into the fluting. I guess my ignorance is showing. I'm definitely not ruling anything out.

I was doing some thinking today. One of my .300 win mags is a Remington 700 sendero. Is pretty heavy. So I don't use it much. I could use that as a donor to save some money and time. What do you think?

Defiance classic short action.
Proof 18” barrel.
Stockys stock, VG hunter, hunter or rokstock.
Hawkins BDL or UM DBM.
Trigger tech, whichever one you prefer.
Everything should be about $3k and right at 6lbs.
Then have UM put it all together.
Cartridge, whatever makes you fuzzy.

I've never built a rifle with the GOAL of spending a certain amount, but I have two semi-custom Tikka's that I built to get a particular cartridge, barrel length, and barrel quality I desired. Personally I think the Tikka action is superior to even fully custom Rem 700s due to shorter bolt throw and the way the bolt springs open and cycles. I love the factory trigger too, I don't need crazy light and it's very crisp and more importantly drop safe and harsh condition tolerant. The only issues with Tikka in my opinion are their cartridge offerings, which is why I went the custom barrel route. Even then, I'm splitting hairs and mostly doing it just because it's fun to tinker.

I think both of my builds ended up around 2k, and that's without a stock upgrade. So figure that in and you're probably looking at 2500-3000 for a custom Tikka. UM will build you a custom Tikka from scratch for about 3k, so that sounds about right. They allowed me to send them a barrel blank of my choosing last time around, so that could really open up your choices. And now with their rings and bottom metal options I think the arguments against a Tikka are getting pretty sparse...

And I tend towards smaller calibers now, I think my next build will be a 25-284 because I have standard bolt faces on both guns and I really like the 284 case and being a special snowflake.

Also agree with Cynocism above - the proof MTR is an incredible rifle. I actually chose every component of my custom rifle to mirror the Proof MTR because that package is so well put-together and thought out. The only differences in my custom is a shorter 22" barrel (MTR in the 7mm PRC is 24") and I also wanted chassis with the folding HNT26 stock. Tradeoff I made is I don't get a factory gun with the factory put-together, testing, and MOA guarantee. If you don't like a chassis, or the pain of pulling everything together I would recommend the Proof MTR.

The new MTR has short barrels now. Damn!

Proof elevation MTR is offered in 22” barrels now. I wouldn’t even consider a custom now at this point outside of a competition rifle.

I would probably build a 280 Ackley or a 7mm PRC.

I would use a titanium action with integral bases like the Defiance Titanium X.

22 inch proof barrel just because I like mid-length barrels.

Gunwerks sheep hunter stock whatever it is called.

2 stage trigger from Bix and Andy.

I'd prefer to build it as a ADL, but if that wasn't; possible I'd use Gunwerks bottom metal.

Then I'd build a spare in 223 with a 1 in 8 twist and eventually a third one in 6.5 Creedmoor.

Since this thread got revived I'll update on what I ended up doing. I kinda went 2 routes. I bought a Seekins Element in 300 PRC and had a Remington 700 rebarreled and blue printed by Benchmark Barrels. It's now a 7mm PRC.

What about the scopes on each of those?

I'm Surprised at how many defiance action recommendations have been made when there are better options available at comparable or even less expensive prices.

Proof 7PRC AT 22”
Manners EH1 with full SRS ARCA
Hawkins Hunter DBM and mag
Triggertech special trigger

I can't say Defiance even crosses my mind anymore. It does surprise me too that it's still a popular recommendation.
