can anyone recommend some good budget zip off options for insulation layers(under $200). Wouldn't mind trying a pair of puffy pants. Or some zip off synthetic or fleece. I have been using the same old fleece MEC pants for over a decade. great around camp after a long day. Great to sleep in. Sucks trying to put them on freexing on a ridge glassing. I assume the puffy's will be a little warmer but not as nice around camp. All my other clothing is top notch. But I don't want to commit to anything pricy if I go back to fleece. Any thoughts on the Kuiu Kenai? they look like they may fit the bill

What temperatures are you dealing with? What exactly do you mean by using fleece? I have some fleece sleepwear type pants that I use for alpine hiking in the summer. They work over a soft jogger pant but not very effective over a regular pant material.

Kenai pants are warmer than I expected, quiet but fragile. Close in warmth to the lighter kuiu down pants but almost twice the weight and bulk. A good choice if you’re going to do any walking in them. Worked great under rain pants hiking in a cold wet storm. I think I could use them for glassing to a point but if that was my main use I would go for a down pant.

If look around you can find the UA alpine ops down pants for a good price. Weighs about 18oz for a large. Wish I would’ve kept mine.

If you want to go really cheap just to get a test run the mil surplus puffy pants are ok. Heavy and bulky but I paid under 30 bucks for mine. Very warm. I use mine sitting in deer stands in the teens.

Just ordered a pair of the OR Allies Collosus pants. They show $112 on the site on sale but when you put them in your cart they are $84. The muliticam are $117. Seems like a great deal.

My wife intercepted the package and has decided to wrap it up and put it under the tree since I never tell her Xmas ideas. So I won’t have feedback for a couple of weeks.

However, two I my buddies purchased these same pants and said the folllwong.

“These pants are really nice actually. Nicer than I thought they would be.”

“They are pretty baggy, but comfortable”

Not sure if that helps you much.

Look at the Kryptek Sentinal pants. Insulated, windproof, camo, reinforced seat and knees with pockets and belt loops. I just ordered a pair but havent received them yet. I snagged them last week at 45% off with free shipping. This week they are 30% off with free shipping.
