Posting for a friend looking for a good backcountry knife for hunting my first thought was Buck is there any others y’all recommend? Kestrel, Benchmade, argali are to expensive for his budget.

Does he want a knife for general purpose and a separate one for field dressing? Fixed Blade or folder?

Cold Steel is my favorite for fixed blades that will see abuse. They make several hunting knives from various metals, but their pendleton hunting line is nice for the money. I personally have used the mini pendleton for years for all things hunting related. Won't chop wood, but will take care of all medium duty camp duties and game processing.

I would get an EESE uzula or uzula 2

Your looking about about 60 bucks on Ebay.

Sorry should have been more specific an all around fixed blade from camp duties to filed dressing

Spyderco Resilience as treated me well over the years. Holds a great edge.

There is no better knife for the budget minded than a mora.

Any Mora is the best. Scandi grind, good steel, and can be had for less than $20. Buy a couple and keep one in every pack and glove box.

I'll concur with the above posts. I'm not the biggest fan of Cold Steel, but for the application, the pendleton lite and mini are good bargains for a true budget option. I prefer the mini hunter, with its VG1 steel, and its very light. Might be a little small to comfortably perform camp and wood work but a good option. Moras are also a great very affordable option. The scandi grind may not be the best for game processing, but it will do the job and handle camp work well. I have also had really good experience with the Buck Bucklite Max, large and small. I think they're a bargain, and made in the USA for like $20. There's a second version out now, but either one would be fine. These are all basic, budget minded knives, so one should not expect amazing steel performance, but the function is all there. So as long as expectations are kept in check, he would be well served.

Take a look at the Russell brand knives. The "Green River" series of knives have been around longer than most. If your grandpa was a sportsman, he likely had a butcher or skinning knife by this company.

1095 carbon steel doesn't hold an edge like the modern super steels, but they're easy to touch up in the field.

Below are a few sources to purchase blanks for ~$10, the completed knives are easily found online too for only a few bucks more.

Knifemaking.com - Green River
Knifemaking.com- Indian Ridge Traders
Track of the Wolf - Russell Knives

Go online to bass pro or Cabela’s and pick up any one of 3 fixed blade models of the Mora (Morakniv) they carry - range from $20 - $45. The “Companion” is a great all around fixed blade for cheap.
Very durable, hold an edge well and sharpen up easily.

At that price range, the Spyderco Persistence and Tenacious need to be in the discussion. The fit and finish are remarkable for the price.

My mora has taken a beating and is a great knife but it generally stays in my truck. I really like the esee Izula, great knife and a really solid price.
