This can be tricky although a few brands come to mind like horn hunter or badlands. If that’s all you got to work with you could look into those. But hauling out meat past 50 lbs in a cheaper bag will make you wish you saved some more money and bought a dedicated bag that has much better weight hauling capabilities. I packed out 90 lbs on a badlands 2200 and it was the most miserable experience I’ve ever had, my waist line was bruised black from using it. I’d look for a good used bag in the classifieds on here before I spent money on a brand new sub par pack.

Look in the gear deals thread. Scheels is having a sale on Stone Glacier Solos for roughly $400. This is a STEAL.

Not sure what size of pack you're looking for but Black Ovis has some smaller Mystery Ranch packs on sale like the pop up 38 for $225. It has a weight capacity of around 80 lbs. It might be worth looking into.

Wait for KUIU to have a 25-30% off sale, which is several times a year, and can usually get 5-7% more off through Active Junky. Mystery Ranch Metcalfs occasionally go on sale for about $400.

Those are the lowest entry points for quality, new packs.

You can probably find used Exo K2s for about $350-400 or used K3s for $500.

For $300 I would buy an Arc'teryx Bora 80. They haven't made them in a few years but they are very solid packs.

Ii had one of these years ago for hiking and it was a great pack. Not sure how it would do hauling meat though, never tried it.

A few times a year Black Ovis puts MR packs in sale. I bought a Metcalf for $319 when I combined the sale, a promo code and Active Junky.

My buddy bought a MR Terraframe 89 for $200 and change a few years back on clearance at Sierra.com. He uses it for elk hunting and likes it.

It’s not hard to find an Outdoorsmans frame pack used for under $300. It’s a good pack at full price, not just when you can get it cheap

That mystery ranch pop up 38 on sale for $225 checks all the boxes it seems like. Decent reviews from what I can find as well

I have had good experience with Arc'teryx Bora 80s. Picked one up off of Craigslist for $150 several years ago and used it to haul heavy loads before upgrading to a Stone Glacier. The Bora can take a beating, but is heavy. You can still find them on eBay or Craigslist every now and then for cheap

Used in the classifieds is the way to go. Or shop for MR sales. As mentioned above, Sierra occasionally has some great deals.

On the other hand, it’s hard to appreciate a good pack without suffering a little before. I would say my most miserable 3 pack outs were followed by a purchase of a new pack 😉

I’m guessing most of us put so much emphasis on a good pack because we suffered through plenty of heavy loads with crappy packs… then when you find one that is top notch, you instantly turn into a pack diva… if you’re practical you stop there, if not, then you want to try every pack to make sure you aren’t missing out, haha… I’m not practical, but strive to become. I blame my wife, I just don’t have a great case to present to her yet, all I know is she’s the cause.
