Need some guidance, long time tinkerer, first time bolt gun setup. My X-bolt Speed SPR shoots lights out (so I won’t be jumping to a Tikka anytime soon, no matter how bad I want one…. I mounted my scope with the Wheeler Professional Reticle Leveling System but used the mounted lower half of the Browning scope base to level the rifle because I couldn’t find a flit spot on the rifle itself. Vortex low pro bubble mounted on scope and got all as level as I could.

While shooting, it seems I always have the rifle canted to the right (bubble left) per the bubble on the scope. I have to fight to get it over to “level”on the bipod. Have shot mostly at 100yds with great results. Last range day was short and I only had time to stretch to 300 and 400 for a couple of small round count groups, and they were well under 1.5 MOA.

I just picked up the Wheeler Level Level Level that goes on the action raceways because I’m in my own head about if the scope is correctly leveled or not….

X-bolt folks, where/how do you level your rifle for scope mounting. I have the nice gun vise, but need help with bubble level location on the rifle.

Also, almost forgot, tall target test was spot on at 100yds dialing up 10Mils. Maybe leave well enough alone until I learn more???? Only 150 rounds in so far…

just pulled out an old plumb bob and when level to the magnetic action level in the very back of the raceway, scope it canted top right, bottom left. When level to the scope mounted bubble, vertical crosshair looks dead on.

At the very rear of the receiver, there are a couple flats that you can index off of with a level or even just a straight bar and eyeball it. If your stock stands proud of those two flats, you might need a washer to index off.

Thanks, Fuzzy, I’ll check for clearance and go from there.

It’s unclear to me if you’re concerned with whether the bubble level attached to the scope is true or whether the scope/reticle itself is true. Those are two separate operations. Between the two, getting the attached bubble level right is the more finicky because the act of tightening sends the level off.

Yes to both!

1) Level the rifle, like the example above.
2) With the rifle level as an index, mount the scope using a second level and tighten the rings.
3) Last, snug the scope-mounted bubble ring onto the scope, but not too tight. Using the scope level as an index, tap the bubble ring until it matches and tighten it. Could take some trial and error.
