Ya, I'd stick with the rifle you know, your 300 mag, and tougher bullets like the Nosler Partition, Accubond, or the Barnes. I used my 30-06 with 200 gr Nosler Partitions on an 8' Brooks Range grizzly a couple of years ago. After a long stalk, all the shooting happened at 40 yards and in. There was a fair bit of shooting in a hurry. I used all four of mine, missing once, making two good hits, knocking the bear down twice. My guide also chipped in, which I appreciated, with his 338 Win Mag loaded with 225 gr Barnes TSX bullets.
I was not surprised, but not pleased, when the bear got up after being hit hard. Gotta be prepared for that.
The brown bears tend to be bigger than my grizzly. Danged things can go down with one shot, or not.
