Out hunting the last week of the season, managed to fall down pretty hard. I thought my elbow caught the brunt of the fall @ first, until I looked over the gun my grandfather gave me.

Scope is fine, but there is about a 3.5" crack on the underside of the stock just up from the trigger guard.

I am going to have to buy a new stock, any recommendation for a lighter weight option that the beautiful walnut that was on it?

Breaks my heart to have to put a new stock on it, but I would rather have a gun I can shoot than a nice one to look at.

Personally, I'd repair the stock and keep it as is for sentimental purposes.

If your set on a new one, its hard to go wrong with a Bell & Carlson or McMillan.

The gunsmith I spoke with said that he can glue it back together, but that I would have to sign an insurance waiver if I were to shoot it for fear of it blowing up or something.

This is the only rifle I am going to use, I don't want nor have any need to purchase another as I am a bowhunter. The gun gets broken out the last week of the season solely to put meat on the table.

I'd talk to a different smith just because he used the word glue. The stock can be repaired and would be stronger than the day it left the factory if its done right.

I have repaired a few wooden stocks, the obsolete, rare types as on Brno 21/22& ZG rifles and P-64 Mod. 70s, by using epoxy bedding compound and sometimes pins made from small diameter bolts. It is easy to do and holds together very well, IME.

Any GOOD 'smith, can do this so that you would never know it had sustained a fracture and it will be stronger than the surrounding wood; check with several to find the "right" guy. However, the waiver will be S.O.P. and is not a cause for undue worry, IMO.

Note: I an an old geezer, not very bright, so, if I can do it, anyone can!

Being in Bozeman my choices are a bit limited, but I will ask around and see if there's anyone else around here that can repair it w/o glue.

It would be nice to have the original stock, but it is a heavy sob and if it needs replaced I would go with a lighter synthetic stock that I can put a bipod on if necessary.

I do like to shoot it quite a bit, gets very expensive but it is a tack driver for sure!

I just prefer bowhunting hands down over hunting with a gun, so this isn't going to be a top of the line super high quality stock. I need something that is lighter that the one I have now and isn't going to break haha.

Actually your being in MT is not that big of a deal for a stock passed down from family. Stocks are not that expensive to ship.

Check with Christiansen Arms, my father in law rolled his atv and broke his Sako. He ordered a new one from Sako and it was like $400. He then found a take off from Christiansen Arms for $65 sent the other one back. Don't know if they'll have one to fit your gun but might be worth trying.

Redhawk rifles sell B&C stocks for the best price and sell take off Remington stocks fairly cheap.

A pro can repair it with epoxy and brass/ss rods and make it look factory. If you want new, Bell and Carlson makes a good stock for less than 300. Or maybe look around for a used wood take off from the same era.

Clarktar - this is merely a suggestion - I would check with MPI stocks in Portland first - ask Doc to give his opinion and listen to him

This is the second time you have brought this up. Can you just give us the dirt?
