I have a long action magnum bolt face Win Model 70 that I never got to shoot well. I hate the factory B&C stock for a number of reasons. Aftermarket stock options were limited before the rokstock.

So, I buried it in the back of the safe.

But, since the Rokstock is inlet for Model 70 LA, I’m considering tinkering with it, getting the Rokstock, and rebarreling it.

What cartridge would I go with? I don’t have magnumitis. I like the what I call “Goldilocks cartridges” that balance speed and power with recoil (shootable elk cartridge is what I’m after). Was always a fan of the 280 AI but it’s a standard bolt face. I also have a awesome 6.5 PRC (which almost defines Goldilocks) so that one is out.

Any recommendations? I reload. Cartridges with good brass options are almost required. Factory ammo even better.

This is Rokslide after all so I’m going to add 6 UM as an option to save us all lots of posts, pages and scrolling.

I would have said 6.5prc until I read "no 6.5prc" 6um would be the next guess for me 🤷 I would just sell the rifle instead of dumping money into it. Especially since you have your almost goldilocks rifle already.

The 6.5 PRC is pretty Goldilocks.

That’s probably what I should do. Save almost $1500 on upgrades and then the money from the sale in addition would go a long way to hunting.

I would suggest running 7PRC sine the 6.5 is out. I too am a fan of the 280 Ackley but I was in a similar situation where I had a magnum boltface long action sitting around.

I run a 160CX in both the 7 PRC and 280 Ackley. The recoil is a touch more stout in the 7 just due to the additional powder but its still quite manageable. The 7 PRC wears a 20" barrel to stay a usable length while running a suppressor and has a muzzle velocity right around 2900fps. I can say it works quite well on elk.

There's a lot of good reloading components available for it as well.

Push feed or CRF model 70? I'd prob go 7prc if you want factory ammo, if hand load 7saum. Idk how well a 3.1 coal case will feed in a model 70 long action VS something 3.3"+ coal.
