I have a friend who reached out to me about their 5 year old son and his obsession with archery. Im curious if there are any options out there other than a toy bow for a child at that age and size? He's about 4 ft tall and weighs 40 lbs, I told her i didnt know if there was any other option that just a toy bow. Any input from you guys is greatly appreciated!

It's a bit pricey, but I like the Genesis. That's what I started all 3 of my kids on. It will last him until he's ready for a "real bow", because you can crank up the draw weight up to 20 pounds, and because there's no let off, he can use it even until he grows to adult size.

Diamond atomic is what I got my son because of the adjustability. Kind of lame that it doesn't come with a peep though.

I bought a Diamond Atomic for my son when he was 5. Passed it down to his sister and now it’s being passed down to the littlest sister. She has been shooting her big sisters Stalker recurve but it’s time to mover her up.

Mass weight of the bow is the most important consideration for a small child. They simply aren't very strong and have trouble keeping the bow steady. I would recommend a DIamond Atomic. Lighter than the Genesis so easier for a small child. Don't need a press to adust. Can literally turn the draw weight down and unstring it with very little effort. IMO the Genesis is a better second bow.

Im liking the looks of the atomic. My little guy is 6 and has a toy Johnny Morris suction cup arrow bow, but wants a real one. He already actually has pretty decent form when hes being somewhat serious.

What are you guys using for a youth release? My Scott thumb releases are too big for his hand, and the index release won't stay on his wrist.

Both my kids shoot the atomic. I installed a peep for them and they shoot pretty accurately for what they are. My 9 year old uses a tru ball champ and my 5 year old uses a tru ball hero. He wants a thumb button but we have tried big sisters and there has been a couple times drawing with his thumb on the barrel and arrow was released on the shot. He has also forgot and let go of the entire release at the shot rather than hitting the button.

The champ is honestly not a terrible release, I lost my release at a bow shoot this summer and finished the day using her champ and while it wasn't ideal, it wasn't horrible.
