Not really certain of a better forum to posy this to ...

My daughter is heading to the So island of New Zealand (Christchurch) for a semester abroad in February. I'm planning to visit and ideally would get to do a little hunting while I am there. Basic web searches reveal lots of hunts that don't really fit my budget and am wondering if anyone has any pointers / experience I can draw from. While it would be awesome to come home with a giant Red Stag, I'm not willing to shell out that sort of $ and just want to enjoy the experience and hopefully have something to bring home ... Stag, Thar, Chamois, Fallow Buck. Tahr is really what I would love to chase, but at the end fo the day the experience is more important to me. Any pointers would be greatoy appreciated.

Nz South Island is 40% public land.. no tags required, no guides.

100% diy low budget heaven.

The chances you get an animal with a bow on a diy public land hunt first time is real low. Ur best bet would be to creek bash up the west coast and shoot what turns up. That's my opinion obviously.

Plenty of guys on here have done what ur wanting to do. They'll chime in.

Yes, what you’re thinking about is doable. Dial back your expectations, do some research and go have a great time. Get on some of the NZ hunting message boards and see if you can get some local insight. Kiwis tend to be friendly and you might even get an invite to go hunting.

I appreciate the feedback. I accept that withiut a guide in completely foreign territory lowers my odds, but that's OK. What better way to discover NZ than in the hills with a bow in hand (even if it's mostly hiking ...)

'Giant' red stags only live behind wire haha, but there are plenty of options for real hunting.
DIY for deer is really tough, especially bow hunting, we have no seasons and no limits so stags get hammered everywhere,

I will flick you a PM with some of our pricing and options for free range hunts.
