Bow choice dilemma

Hey guys,

I'm considering three bows at this point right now.
Obsession Defcon m6 or m7
Bowtech Prodigy
Bowtech BTX

I had a 2014 obsession evolution that I loved. It was very smooth and very quiet. Only problem I had was when it came time to shooting fixed blade broadheads. I was super frustrated with my point of impacts. I was shooting GT kinetic kaos 340s with 100gr tips and aerovane 2s at 60#/28.5". I took it to a local tuner over here in Montana and he said maybe my arrows were slightly overspined and the best he could do was rest tune or shim it to adjust the left and rights.

I loved how the obsession felt as far as draw cycle but the probability to run into having to re shim it makes me worried.

I've tested out the prodigy and BTX at a local shop on the comfort setting at 70# and it felt great. Had a little bit of hand shock compared to my obsession but the draw cycle was almost comparable. I'm comfortable drawing 70# now and want to shoot that poundage.

Would you guys give obsession another chance? Or give bowtech a go this season?

Thanks!
Justin

Honestly the re-shimming is not an issue at all really. It is no different than yoke tuning any other bow and is nearly just as fast. The coatings in 2014 were off a bit hence the reason for the shims. Some have the problem and some didn't but it was a relatively easy fix. I know that quality control is much better now and the coatings are done in-house. I haven't really seen an issue with any of the 2016 yet, however we are not into broadhead season yet. I can say that the 2016 obsessions are a big improvement over the previous years and are very nice rigs. So far we are showing chrono numbers at or just below IBO, which is a really good sign.

Hope this helps a little, if you have any obsession questions feel free to drop me a line.

You need to find someone else to tune your obsession before discounting it. There is really no such thing as an overspined hunting arrow.

Do you ever make it to Missoula?

I've been to the Missoula shop, straight 6 archery I believe. Didn't have them tune it. Just wanted to stop by to see what it had to offer while the wife went to the mall. Thanks for the help guys

I have the Prodigy, and have shot the BT-X. Prodigy has a better draw cycle to me. BT-x has a better grip and holds better for me. I hate the look of the huge cams on the BT-X.

I shot the prodigy and it was a good shooter and I'd hunt with it
I also have a bud that is an Obssession dealer and has been trying to get me to shoot one for the last two years. So I gave in this year and ordered a def-con 6 sight unseen. It's a 55-65 30" draw and so far I love it it's a hell of a shooter smooth quiet and fast. Will be good when I load it up with a 500 grain arrow
This was the first time I have ever bought a bow without shooting it but I'm glad I did. Can't say enough about this thing

I can drill Solid Broadheads to 70 yards w my Evolution. 30" 70lbs, 300 spine bloodsport arrows. I would definitely encourage you to get your bow tuned by someone else, and yes, I would absolutely tell you to get another Obsession.

If you liked your Obsession and wanted something real similar but with the ability to yoke tune your bow you might want to look at the Expedition bows. That being said, you'll have to yoke tune every time you change strings, where with a cam system like Obsession uses, you'll only have to shim it once.

Is say the Obsession hands down. Bowtech aren't what they once were.

I know this is an old thread, but get rid of the Aerovanes for broadheads. Even the owner of Firenock has said that both Aerovane 2 and especially Aerovane 3 are picky about broadheads because of the super high spin rates and he only recommends certain ones.

Look into expedition bows. May not have a monstrous name but they need not be overlooked. If interested shoot me a Pm

Several months ago I purchased a BTX 31. Aside from a few issues with the set up from the "pro Shop" I purchased it from, it shoots great! Not sure what you are referring to by your comment, but I would not shy away from a BTX.

To the OP. If you can, shoot them all, then decide.

Not what they once were? Give me a break.

Seriously think the Bowtech bows of today are better than the old standby Ally, Tribby, Guardian ?

Frankly I don't. I love the Prodigy. But the limb flaking and things seem to be more pronounced then before when Savage didn't own them.

BTW
I love invelvet too !

Ya I don't no. Before I purchased my prodigy I shot a HTX elite energy 35,impulse 34, and a Hoyt defiant 34. I wanted to shoot a halon 6 but seen the shop owner draw back to shoot and it derailed on him. You have to shoot what you like the best. Like my shop owner says "you have to pick your own girlfriend" I chose the prodigy and it was a easy choice.

As far as the bowtech's go I would pass on them right now. A lot of limb issues showing up with tne btx over on AT. This makes about 8 yrs. running for bowtech's having limb issues.

I read the info from Firenock and was surprised he specified certain braodheads for the vanes. Figured it was a co-marketing/branding/money thing. DO you have any experience with them yourself? I plan to try them on a new batch of arrows and don't want to reinvent the wheel to get the damn things to fly straight.

Ordered the Obsession DefCon 6 last week. Cannot wait to hunt with that thing!

I have 3 years of extensive testing with AV2 and the AV3. This is not a money thing, back door agreement thing, this is the fact that the vanes spin the arrow so fast, nothing will fly with them. I did not buy it either and since I already had his jig (which is 10x better than any other jig on the market) so I spent 3 years trying to get them to fly on every bow/arrows combination I can come up with. I have even shot machanicals with them. NO GO.

It frustrates me because he is really on to something. I hit 6" high at 60 yards with his vanes. They fly like darts but can not get a BH to fly.

I will say this. I have shot slick tricks, German Kinetic and the Ramcat into a 18:1 and they twist so much after impact, I have to cut them out. I have torn up a perfectly good 18:1 shooting broad heads guided but the AV. They are really something to hold...

If I was an avid 3D shooter, I would not consider shooting anything else.
