So I had my first 2 oz pour last night of the soft red wheat rickhouse proof.
My inital thoughts.

Man what a nose. Do I even need to drink it or can I just smell it all night.
Toasted / burnt cherry reduction and vanilla.
or cherry, barrel char and vanilla if you perfer that description thinhorn.

Palate. yea. Its a wheater. Better then most. But still had that wheater taste that I dont favor. Can I just go back to smelling it?

Finish was nice.

Overall its in the top 3 wheaters I have had.

Now I wait for the 1856 8 yr review. That mash bill does not have any wheat.

Here are the ones I have. I’m going to open the one on the right tonight and see what I think.

The unopened tater portion of my collection. The JDSBBP bottles on the right are the best in the collection, from a pure taste perspective. The particular 1792 full proof hiding in the back is a close second. The JD Rye is the best bottle here, and I’m not a rye guy generally speaking. The fact that the rye is $70 on almost any decent shelf is mind blowing.

So with your not so favorable tase for wheat, what are your top 3 if I may ask? I am more picky on the wheat myself and I fell in love with a Costco barrel pick of Old Elk that was absolutely amazing! Probably best I've ever had. This was a few years back now. I wish she was full again.☹️20260305_184732.jpg

In CA. Not sure what msrp is but all 5 was right around $700. Seemed like a decent deal without jumping through a bunch of hoops or waiting a long while.
Thanks, it's not easy to find them all in one go like that. Good score and hope you enjoy those!

For my top 2 wheaters and #3 I just started. It would seem I perfer high wheat wheaters at about 6 years old generally.

1). ASW fiddler georgia heartwood cask strength. I am on my second bottle. Worth noting @Steve O was the one that reccomended it. I have found his reccomendations to always be spot on. Mashbill is 51% Corn, 45% Wheat, 4% Malted Barley. So pretty high wheat. Average at 6 years old Seelbachs still has some of their single barrel pick. This is what I have read, on the distilate most ASW products are their own distillate the Fiddler series includes one of their own distillate (soloist), MGP wheater (Georgia heartwood) in a combo of both.

2). Its almost not fair to tell you about this one as its all gone. Lost Lantern Cedar Ridge Straight Wheat Single Cask R/bourbon Pick. The mashbill is 100% malted white winter wheat. 6 years old. So techinally a single malt that is 100% wheat. It was delicious while it lasted. I cant even see that cedar ridge distillery in Iowa has any right now. I dont know if its still in production. Worth noting Lost Lantern is a non distilling producer that goes to distilleries and samples and buys barrels and bottles them. While they usually cost more then straight from the distillery products you generally get them at natural cask strength. My palate jives with the guys at lost lantern so I buy their single barrel stuff when it looks good.

3). Holladay soft red wheat rickhouse proof. Im only 2 oz into my 13.5 oz half bottle but man it really hit nice. Mashbill 73% Corn, 15% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley. So its pretty low wheat and 6 years old. My first impressions of it were very good. While its a bit too early to say its a favorite it does land better then weller 12 or 107. I may just like their distillate better. I will know more when I try their straight bourbon thats not wheated.

Other wheaters I have had off the top of my head.
Weller 107 - It meh but better then the 12. Wouldnt buy again.
Weller 12 - Was very flat to me. Maybe the lower proof. Wouldnt buy again.
Old elk double wheat - I couldnt even get though this one as a mixer. Ended up giving it away. It was so bad I havent gone back to old elk brand at all.
Weller full proof - I enjoyed this one but I cant reccomend due to the unobtanium level of it. I would buy at MSRP of 60-80 again but not more then that.
Markers Mark cellar 2025 - It had some funky off putting notes. My store had one open and I sampled it and declined to buy a bottle.
2 makers mark single barrels from r/bourbon at different times. Same as other makers it just had off putting notes to me. The guy I split bottle with said he loved them.
Larceny Barrel proof - I didnt like it neat but did like it mixed in coke and was delicious that way. It was strong enough to cut through the coke and still have some taste.
I have had samples of different pappy's and didnt love any of them.
