Bourbon

This one's for @Reburn - had some Angel's Envy Finished Rye this past weekend, which was really good. I've been missing the vanilla in some lesser ryes. But the real star was Whistlepig 12 Year Old World Rye...damn!

Also had some Knob Creek Smoked Maple, which was interesting. Really sweet, basically was like drinking a 90 proof cocktail.

Picked up some Russel's Single Barrel today to try based on recommendations in this thread, and a Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye Blend. Shop had a bottle of Widow Jane 13 on the shelf that was hard to walk away from, but it was also marked up pretty high.

I'm kinda of a canadiien whiskey guy. Kinda had to learn to slow a bit cuss I got in lots of fights. Black velvet, RnR. Cut the bottom of the plastic pints n put a stick threw em for a bull moose raking sounds or dip in water n pour out for cow pissing sounds. Makeshift megaphone. N fun making the caller

Bourbon fairy was at my house yesterday. Whistle pig is always a good Rye. I had some 15 yr cask strength single barrel that was amazing. I like the 6 RYE, 10 and 15 the best.

I poped that starlight blueberry. Its amazing. Starlight is really doing good things as a whole.

The Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye is fine…

But the Wild Turkey Rare Breed is a really nice place to end up.

My loyalties (?) lie with Jack Daniels "Old Number 7", but I haven't touched hard liquor in probably 25 or 30 years! Just not my "thang"!
My dad absolutely refused to drink "blended" whiskey. It was "straight bourbon whiskey" or nothing.
Actually, if offered a drink of "Old Rooster Toot 🐓", he'd drink that!

He always bought "10 year old Dant".
He wasn't a slobbering drunk, but he was going to have his 3 or 4 "snorts" every day, if not more! Probably what killed him!

I’ve slowed down buying bottles a lot especially after I added everything to my Only Drams profile and saw how much I’ve spent. But I picked up a Four Roses Single Barrel and a OFSB recently.

This didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped...

The Penelope Wheated was good - not amazing, but good enough.

The BH Subtle Smoke didn't do anything for me.

The Whistlepig Farmstock Rye was the grassiest I've ever had, and not in a way that made me like it.

The Rare Breed Rye was damn good. Of the four, I kept what was left of this and gave the others away.

Got a delivery today…the Widow Jane and the Whistlepigs are new (I’ve had the 12-yr before).

Widow Jane is the bomb. So is anything wild turkey. And most things whistle pig.

I have found the vaults worth it if you can swing it. Those are my second bottles. I havent opened the black opal yet.

Tried one of those doing the tour/ tasting/attached bar. Great little distillery to stop at if you are in the neighborhood. And we try to get to the neighborhood when we visit the daughter. There is a darn good bbq joint walking distance as well. Well good for a guy who only visits TX and KC 🤓

The Widow Jane Lucky 13 was great. I’m on the hunt for The Vaults locally…don’t think I would spring for Black Opal yet, but if you ever want someone to drink and shoot with, I’d make the drive from TN 😂

Tried Four Roses tonight too…fine, but not a favorite. I’m finding that there are a handful of bourbons I really like and a whole bunch that just feel the same to me. And some that are just nasty.

Have WJ Decadence, Russell’s Single Barrel, and Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit on the way now. Looking forward to the single barrels, but also restocking on Wild Breed…it’s a definite favorite for me being barrel strength with a good-but-not-special-or-weird taste.

Here are some things for you to try. I'm excluding shit that is impossible to find. All this stuff is always on my shelf.

Woodford reserve batch proof. top 5 favorite.
Jimmy red is doing amazing things. I like all their stuff but their single barrels and barrel strength I love. Top 5 fav.
elijah craig 18 and elijah craig barrel proof top 5.
Multiple bottles of russells single barrel. Top 5

Widow jane the vaults
found north - sign up for their lottery on their website. you will win something. Its worth the cost.
bardstown discovery series - Thank you for that one steve o
pinhook - I like their bourbons better then their ryes. Currently I have a bourbon war 9 year that is delicious.
Eh taylor and eagle rare is worth the chase and becoming shelf stable in Texas. single barrels and barrel proofs are still impossible to find. Its only worth it at the $msrp. Dont pay secondary bro. Dont encourage bottle flippers.
Kings county barrel strength
I have had a number of good frank august single barrels
James pepper decanter series
frey ranch
ASW fiddler cask strength
John J bowman single barrels are good
Knob creek single barrels are my beam distillery picks always. They are also starting to release at cask strength and not 120 proof. I dont love bookers and dont find it to be worth the cost.
Whistle pig 6 rye, 10 single barrel high proof, 15 single barrel high proof.
barrel seagrass - start with the cheapest one green label. If you like it you will like the grey and gold labels.

Lost lantern is good to watch but they are a bottler not a distiller. NDP - non distilling producer. So you really have to understand what you are buying from them. They go around to smaller distilleries and do barrel picks. I havent been disappointed with a bottle yet but they are a touch on the high side.
