Boundary Waters Situation

Copper nickel sulphide. It’s not a pretty process. The pollution is all during and after the mining is exhausted.
This mining area is in a direct watershed that flows directly into the BWCAW.
We have been dealing with reality. That’s why we got the previous administration to pass the 20 year moratorium in the first place.

Agree with this ^^^^^

It’s been a generation so people tend to forget what happened 50-75 yrs ago in Minnesota, not pretty.

Show me the locals in the 218 that truly support expanding the mines near the BWCA, it’s been the minority by a mile in the past.

Yes, we need to mine…..No, we don’t need to mine in this fragile watershed unless industry can show some true upgrades in process and safety

Local from the 218 here, I'm all for mineral extraction, but I'm not for this. Hopefully the DNR kills it in permitting. I don't know anyone that understands it that supports it. There have been several other potential mining opportunities in places not even close to the significance of the boundary waters that are in a perpetual state of environmental review that the DNR will never approve. I would say I can't see this getting to the finish line, but we're in some strange times.

Only as long as it puts money in his bank account. The guy has made a lot of money and been absolutely fine with creating a ton of point creep along the way. Public lands being "under attack" is good for his business. The more opportunity to get on podcasts and make Instagram reels, the better for him.
If all of us showed as much interest as Newberg in securing hunting for future generations, then maybe we wouldn't see the opportunity we love chipped away piece by piece...

Point creep secures hunting for future generations?

Dude, you are the definition of tripping over dollars to pick up dimes.

Get real. Talking shit on BHA or Randy or whatever organization you dont like for whatever reason is not the point.

If you are serious about conservation and maximizing the landscape we have left to provide the VITAL resources we need, you will realize that there are interests at work that do not share our beliefs and heritage. In fact they just want to use OUR land for their benefit, potentially maim it for generations to come and then move on to the next.

You think point creep is bad because of one man? Just wait until the energy/mining/tech sectors get ahold of public land. Good bye consolidated habitat. Goodbye big game populations. Good bye hunting opportunities.

Im sorry to be fired up but I really find it frustrating when people who are so obviously on our side are demonized for standing up.

I respect Randy so much, Ryan Callahan, Hal Herring. These guys live and breath conservation. Im glad it is their job. We need full time employees to stand up for whats important for sportsman and protect our interests.

So other then the local jobs it provides it sounds like the money made won't be staying in the states, foreign company selling to foreign countries. No thanks.

I mean, aren't you Minnesotans used to that already. Except the local jobs are funded by taxpayers and the money still goes to another foreign country........

All this orange man hate cracks me up. It's clearly wrong to mine this area, but consider what's already wrong in your state via who's been voted into state offices.

Bogey man bogey man bag orange man spen money on my 501c .. check got it . You mean the same social media clown that have exploited hunting for personal and monetary gain ? The same ones that had armys of flatbill Tacoma drivers destroy the Idaho otc system and the Nevada fcfs system ?

I haven’t studied this mining proposal enough to fully make up my mind on it, but if this is out, where do we mine? I can’t recall a single time mining is proposed, or really any extractive industry, the Tawney et al crowd has supported it.

My biggest hang up with this one is the fact that we have to process the ore in China. However reading up on it, we have closed 70% of our primary (ore smelting) copper processing facilities and 100% of the secondary (scrap) facilities since 1980. There isn’t the capacity to process domestically and the same people up in arms about every mine are going to be up in arms about more processing facilities.

Theres less deer hunters afield today in Idaho (and in a lot if western states) then back in the 90s. Whats been exploited?

Deer pop is down.

That is mother natures doing, and human encroachment on winter range, human impact on migration connectivity, lion and wolf predation.

You think the boogey man is your neighbors kid trying to get into hunting?

What a joke? Am I reading this right?

Once again, tripping over dollars to pick up nothing.

I imagine everyone commenting against this on this forum also thinks fraud is bad, so idk what your point is. It’s possible to want to crack down on fraud, support responsible mining, and still think this is a bad idea

So much here is typical straw man talking points . Maybe Inform yourself on the goings on . Fortunately me no one is my boogy man. Remember who unleashed this wolf scourge on us , refuses to manage predators, and who lives in the tract houses what are encroaching on habitat . .

And lastly no some kid who wants to get into hunting is not bad . Infact I regularly volunteer my time to teach and mentor young hunters .. However I’d prefer not to see another Patagonia wearing tech bro sporting a tikka who isn’t doing it because they actually love the land and the animals.
Instead it’s some fratboy flex for insta or ticktock.

Now back to
The mining discussion . Can you give me some contemporary examples where a new mine polluted a watershed to the point of enduring habitat destruction in the last 26 years ?

AHH, everywhere there is a copper mine there is high polution. The ore will go to China for smelting and possibly never return the the US. All for a reported few hundred jobs. Latest report says they will be largely imported workers from Chile.

I guess my point was too subtle or passive aggressive for you to pick up on.

Placing blame on Trump/Republican Party for removing protections is comical when compared to the fraud and corruption that is taking place in the state of Minnesota which is run by Democratic appointees that have taken a blind eye, allowed, or been involved with said corruption.

Basically, I'm pointing out the need for Minnesotans to remove the log from their own eyes before pointing out the splinters in others.

Fraud is bad, mining critical areas is bad. In this day in age, hard to have cake and eat it too. But whatever. Time for me to go back to the cat shit mine. Gotta another doosey today.

It’s very easy to blame Trump and the Republican party for this.
Trump started this whole fiasco during his last term when his buddy Luksic, owner of tge mining company Antofagasta, who also happens to own the mansion that Ivanka and Jared lease in Washington expressed interest in setting up in northern MN.
And Republican senator Pete Stauber MN is the author of HJ RES 140. The bill that just passed.

They had interest before Trump was president.
