I need some help interpreting some borescope pictures. I've got a Remington 700 CDL in .30-06 that I bought new around 5 years ago. It's probably only had around 150 rounds at the most put through it. I've probably only hunted with it around 15 days since I live in a shotgun only state and only use it for out of state hunts. I cleaned it pretty well last week and could see some spots in the bore that looked to be corrosion. I ordered a borescope to get a better look. The spots are worse the closer you get to the muzzle but there are bad spots the length of the barrel. Thanks for any help!

I'd put another 50 rounds through it and see what it looks like
after another cleaning.

Yeah, how it shoots should be the main factor to consider. An inexpensive, mass produced factory rifle barrel is always going to show some signs of wear. They usually look worse than they really are. Looks to me like you've got chrome lining that is flaking off in spots. That's mainly superficial. The chrome lining doesn't really do anything functional. It's there to protect against corrosion. I don't see major pitting or anything deep. Just keep it well oiled for corrosion protection during storage and carry on shooting it. It's far from shot out.

How does it shoot?
Not great. The first shot is on then subsequent shots are off. I'm thinking about pillar bedding and free floating the barrel. I've also wondered if I should try shooting a lighter bullet, currently shooting 180s. I'm really just hoping to be confident with it out to 200 and just use it for eastern whitetail hunts. I just got a Christensen mesa in .300 Win mag that will be my western gun from now on. I like the style and feel of the wood stocked 700 but after 5 days in the backcountry this year it got pretty rusty.

You cant say it shot poorly after just trying one type of ammo. It may just not like that box. buy a few other different boxes and try them out. It will likely show a preference towards one.

Thanks for the info. I was just surprised how rough it looked especially after looking through some of my other bores. The inside of my 16 year old Marlin .22 that has had thousands of rounds through it and goes out in the rain and gets cleaned once a year looks way better. Would there be any benefit to polishing it with some JB bore paste?

I've shot a handful of different loads through it including some premium ones but can't seem to get decent groups

I may be mistaken, but chrome lining of barrels has typically been for ar15 type rifles to protect from wear. Typical bolt action rifle barrels are not chrome lined, as i understand it.

Those photos look like some locations where corrosion occurred and possibly some mass production 'slope' occurred. That is not uncommon in mass production rifle barrels. Looking at the photos, it looks like you did a good job cleaning, looks like you removed pretty much all of the copper and carbon, as I can tell. If the barrel is 'gone', I wouldn't waste another dime on bedding, free floating, trigger, etc. It will never shoot good if the barrel is gone. It would be time to replace the barrel with a new one.
Try a few more brands / wts of ammo before giving up. See if you can find out what the rifling twist rate is. That will give you some guide to what grain bullets may shoot best. Slower twist = you will probably need to shoot 165 or 150 grain bullets. Faster twist=you may be able to shoot 180+ bullets.

Good luck

Google the Kroil oil trick or kroil lapping.
Brownells sells the oil and bore paste in a kit.
You wrap an undersized bore brush in a patch.
Soak with kroil apply the lapping paste and scrub away.
I had to do it on a barrel that was extremely copper fouled to get it shooting again

It will ASTOUND you just how far off one ammo type is from the next sometimes! I've experienced HUGE differences that I wouldn't have thought are even possible!

I'm talking like completely missing the target and target holder! Then you switch back to the premium stuff and bada bing back to how it should be.

That would be galling. My guess a defect during manufacturing- either a dull broach or a lack of lubrication or something of the like. I would contact the manufacturer.

It's definitely more common in AR's but it has been done in several manufacturer's bolt action barrels. I believe (although I certainly could be wrong) Remington was one of them.

Typical remington junk. Throw the barrel in the garbage, buy a #2B Bartlein from red hawk for $369, have it on your door in a week, and pay a smith $300 to turn it and screw it on.

I know you don't want to hear it but I've sold all the Remington's I had due to poor quality. The last donor action I had was so bad I just sold it off at a loss and washed my hands of Remington all together. Sure some of them shoot fine but with all the little screw ups it's a wonder how any of them shoot well. If you have a great gunsmith and a lot of spare cash they can be excellent guns.

Your barrel looks like Remington in a nutshell. Ever wonder why companies go into bankruptcy?

That looks like a pretty bad factory Rem700 barrel. It’s probably junk! You should sell the rifle to me and I’ll dispose of it properly!😁
